What is reality TV?

Oxford dictionary defines Reality TV as “Television programmes in which ordinary people are
continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative”.

How does it work?

❖ Reality TV shows record everything the cast does and this unedited footage is called raw footage
❖ Producers and editors use this raw footage to develop a storyline
❖ Reality TV shows do not have a script written for them (it’s unscripted), but they do have a shooting script, which is an outline
of what will happen in the show
❖ Editors and producers have complete control over:
➢ what footage will be aired
➢ how it is edited
➢ setting up and creating situations between participants
➢ adding dramatic elements to make the show more entertaining
➢ using special equipment that can create a new conversation between individuals using footage from other
conversations
Body Image and Self-Perception

Today’s young generation

are exposed to over 5,000
advertising messages a
day, which influences how
they feel about themselves.

What influences someone’s self-perception? What is body image?

Social media and reality TV play a huge role in young Body image describes our idea of how our body looks and
people’s lives as they are exposed to it regularly how we think it is perceived by others.

Photo Manipulation

How does image manipulation impact how we see beauty?

When we look at photos in the media, most of them go through a process called photo manipulation before being
published.

Airbrush is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as: “to alter or conceal (a photograph or a detail in one) using an
airbrush in a special editing program”.

With make-up, photoshoot lighting and using techniques

and programs such as Photoshop, photos and images
create unrealistic images with flawless features which
young individuals aspire to look like.

For example, photo manipulations allows editors to create

longer legs, enhance cheekbones, change eye colours
and cover acne.
The Bachelor/Bachelorette and America’s Next Top Model

In order to learn about how reality TV can impact the body image and self-perception of
teenagers, you will be looking at examples from two popular shows that have over twenty

Activity 3: ANMT and Diversity
There have been many critiques about ANTM. Some people feel that the judges are rude, have harsh
critiques, the show humiliates and degrades young women, contestants are forced into embarrassing
scenarios, and the show depicts an unrealistic vision of the model life. However, there are some individuals
who believe that there are many positive aspects about the show. For example, Chantelle Brown-Young
(Winnie) appeared on Cycle 21 and soon became a popular contestant. She has a skin condition called
Vitiligo. According to the The Guardian “her skin condition has made her career and become a symbol for
diversification and progression.” Tyra Banks stated “Her beauty is undeniable and her skin breaks down
barriers of what it considered beautiful”.

With a partner, discuss whether you agree with these

critiques. Has America’s Next Top Model become a platform
where people can connect and identify with the diverse
contestants? Use Animoto to make a short video that reflects
on the discussion points between you and your partner.
