GEOSPATIAL Produced By

ECONOMY (IGE)
REPORT
Key Perspectives

G
eospatial technologies are playing an increasingly crucial role in the Indian economy and
society. Geospatial Media and Communications undertook a unique exercise to present
a comprehensive assessment of the current policy environment, industry dynamics and
user adoption, and the future outlook of the market.
Conducted in two phases, the research team of Geospatial Media and Communications
reached out to varied stakeholders of the industry. Under Phase I, one-day workshops with
user groups were organized across 11 states of India. In Phase II, the team conducted one-on-one meetings
with industry leaders, online surveys with users, service providers and consultants to suitably understand
the current state of affairs, and to present a 360-degree view of opportunities and challenges before the
geospatial market in India. As a result of this exhaustive exercise, the IGE – 2018 report presents insightful
and actionable recommendations for both the policy makers and the industry players.
The total worth of the geospatial market in India during 2017-18 was estimated to be approximately INR
7,679 crore and is expected to growth at nearly 13.8% CAGR to reach INR 11,306 crore in 2021 (IGE-18).
Despite the growing market, India still accounts for less than 0.4% of the global geospatial market in value
terms.
At present, the major growth drivers for geospatial market in India is the thrust provided by the central and
state governments for developing a robust physical infrastructure, effective governance delivery including
e-governance and digital economy initiatives, integrated programs on urban and rural development initiatives
such as smart cities, RURBAN clusters etc. These initiatives have provided a significant momentum for
enhanced adoption of geospatial technologies.
Geospatial information management and its adoption has so far been a direct beneficiary of gains in Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) as it rides conveniently on advancing digital ecosystem and digital
infrastructure in the country to deliver value to businesses, departments as well as end consumers/citizens.
However, integration of geospatial information and technology solutions for development planning,
governance delivery and enterprise-wide workflow management needs more than the regular ICT
infrastructure and services planning. Almost invariably, geospatial integration demands for greater attention to
details and coordination among diverse stakeholders and strategic planning for implementation to adequately
deliver on its intended promise.

India’s geospatial industry is currently focused on offering services. It constituted nearly 74.4% of the
total market in 2017-18, followed by hardware at 17.0%. Solutions, which currently form a meager 2.3%
of the total market revenue, is the fastest growing segment as end-users gradually move away from
piecemeal offerings and opt for end-to-end solutions instead.

Framing a conducive policy environment to support wider democratization of geospatial data for
enhanced commercialization with value-added services (VAS) and applications development at the
downstream, and proactive mechanisms for innovation and entrepreneurship promotion can do wonders
to enhance the value addition as well as shift towards innovative product/service segment in the
market. There is a pressing need to comprehensively assess and address the composition, regulation,
development and delivery related issues that are hindering the growth of the industry.
Attend the Artha Summit at Gulmohar Hall, Habitat World, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on May
10th, 2018 to find out and discuss further details on the key findings and recommendations from IGE –
2018 report.
