Aim: To determine Planck’s constant ‘h’ from the stopping voltages measured at
different frequencies and to determine the work function “φ” of a metal.
Apparatus: Laptop, Photoelectric Simulation
Diagram:
Method: 1) Set up diagram as set up above using the needed apparatus and materials.
2) Set the colour filter to be on the colour Turquoise of wavelength 483 nm and
increase the intensity to 100% to allow electromagnetic radiation to strike the
metal cathode so that electrons can me emitted from the surface and attracted to
the collector.
3) Increase the p.d. of the battery until the current becomes zero. (This p.d. is
equal to the stopping potential, Vs.)
4) Measure the stopping potential Vs,
5) Repeat steps 1-4 for various frequencies of light as stated in the table of results.
𝒉 ɸ
6) Use the formula Vs = 𝒆 f - , plot a suitable graph to determine Plank’s
𝒆
constant ‘h’, work function ‘ɸ’ and the threshold frequency ‘f0’.
