7 Superlift Pre-Lift Preparations

Before performing the actual lift, preparation work will be needed as shown below. The top of the carbody
must be cleared and the center gudgeon assembly, gudgeon bushing, and the roller circle must be
prepared for double decking.

Step 1: Carbody, apply multipurpose grease, P&H Spec 472 to lubricate the center gudgeon. Apply
open gear lube, P&H Spec 464 to the swing rollers and lower roller path. The grease seal was
installed on the gudgeon earlier. Note: if applied too early the lubricant can attract
contaminants.

Step 2: Install center gudgeon cap tool to help guide revolving frame bushing over center gudgeon.

Step 3: Remove the carbody railings and do general cleanup of top of carbody area to ready it for
double decking.

Step 4: Wipe open gear lube, P&H Spec 464 on the upper roller path (under revolving frame). Apply
multipurpose grease, P&H Spec 472 to lubricate the center gudgeon bushing interior (inside
revolving frame).

Step 5: Remove tools and equipment from the top of the carbody. Remove the temporary handrails.

Step 6: Remove the cover from the center gudgeon hole. The thrust washer is now exposed - clean the
protectorant from the thrust washer using solvent and cleaning materials as needed. Clean any
burrs from the machined surface where the spherical washer will go using a flapper sander, do
not gouge the surface with a grinder. Check that the lube line is attached to the thrust washer.

Step 7: Check the bushing inside the revolving frame and clean up any burrs as necessary, do not
gouge the soft bushing material. Measure the Inner Diameter (ID) of the bushing to compare to
the center gudgeon Outer Diameter (OD). Measure the bushing with an inside micrometer at 0°
and 90° at three vertical positions: in the middle, near the top, and near the bottom. Measure the
gudgeon with an outside micrometer at 0° and 90° at three vertical positions: in the middle, near
the top, and near the bottom. Use the outside micrometer to check the inside micrometer to
make sure the two micrometers are in sync. Record those measurements on the verification
checklist.
Step 8: Locate the center gudgeon upper nut and spherical washer and clean the protectant from them
using solvent and cleaning materials as needed. Check both the top and bottom surfaces of the
spherical washer and remove burrs if necessary, do not gouge the soft material. Check the
internal threads of the center gudgeon nut and clean up as needed. Check the bottom surface
of the nut and remove burrs if necessary with a flapper sander or equivalent, do not gouge the
machined surface with a grinder. Once cleaned, connect lifting rings and slings. Find the
gudgeon key, key shim, and key bolts so they are not lost.

Step 9: Check the threaded holes in the bottom of the revolving frame that will be used to mount the
gudgeon seal retainer. Holes for the seal retainer are drilled and tapped in the bottom of the
revolving frame. Use a ⅜"-16UNC tap to thread/clean out the holes if needed. The seal retainer
installation will be performed after the shovel is double-decked, but the holes can be prepared
before.

Step 10: Weld revolving frame restraint kit lugs on under side of revolving frame. Refer to dwg R54200F1
for details. After double-decking this will be used to restrain the upper deck. Connect two
turnbuckles to front lugs on crawler frames as per the kit. If turnbuckles are not available
substitute two chain blocks (5 ton minimum).

Step 11: Paint complete the top of the Carbody and the bottom of the Revolving Frame, as the access is
limited after double decking the machine.
Step 12: Clean the mating surfaces of the upper roller path pad, center gudgeon bore, upper swing transmission
surfaces, and the lower swing shaft mounting surfaces free from protectant.
