Tutorial Chapter 2: Precipitation

1. Describe the different methods of recording of rainfall.

2. What are the necessary conditions for precipitation formation?

3. Briefly explain with the aid diagram the convective precipitation

4. Estimate the mean areal precipitation of the catchment using Thiessen Polygon Method
and Isohyetal Method. The following watershed data has shown in the Table 2 (a) and
Table 2 (b) below and name three methods used to determine the mean areal rainfall of
a catchment.

Table 2(a)
Station No. Precipitation (mm) Area (m2 )
1 1000 9.0
2 850 3.0
3 900 6.5
4 2000 20.0

Table 2(b)
Isohyets 127.0 to 139.7 to 152.4 to 165.1 to 177.8 to 190.54 to
(cm) 139.7 152.4 165.1 177.8 190.54 203.2
Area (km2) 181 388 337 311 104 26

5. Compute the average depth of rainfall for the following data using Thiessien Polygon
Method and Arithmetic Mean Method based on table below.

Station A B C D E
Observed 267 198 142 114 81
rainfall (mm)
Polygon area 518 377 906 1495 748
(km2)

6. Using the Arithmetic Mean Method, compute the average annual rainfall, in cm depth, on
the catchment area shown in figure below:
7. A drainage basin is assumed to be an equal sided triangle with a total surface, A of 50
km2. Precipitation gauging stations are located on triangle vertices as shown in figure
below. Determine the mean areal precipitation by using Arithmetic & Theissen Method.

8. For the following data shown in Table 1a and Table 1b, estimate the mean areal
precipitation of the catchment using Thiessen, Isoyhetal and Arithmetic method. Which
of these method gives better estimation and why?

9. Discuss three (3) types of precipitation.

10. The normal annual rainfall at stations A, B, C and D in a basin are 80.9, 67.5, 76.2 and
92.0 cm respectively. In a year 2010, the station D was inoperative and the stations A, B
and C recorded annual precipitation of 91.1, 72.2 and 79.8 cm respectively. Estimate the
rainfall at the station D in that year using Arithmetic Mean Method and Normal Ratio
Method.

11. Name THREE (3) method used the mean areal rainfall of a catchment.

12. Estimate the mean areal precipitation of the catchment using Thiiessen Polygon Method
and Isohyetal Method. The following watershed data has shown in the Table 1(a) and
Table 1(b) below.

13. Determine the mean areal precipitation of a catchment using Thiessen Polygon Method
and Isohyetal Method. The watershed data are shown in Table Q1 (c) (i) and Table Q1
(c) (ii) below.

14. Estimate the rainfall data of Station Y in Table Q1 (b) by using Arithmetic Mean Method
and compute the mean areal precipitation for the following data using Thiessen Polygon
Method.
Table Q1 (b)
Station Precipitation (mm) Area (m2)
W 16.3 38
X 39.9 107
Y P 51
Z 27.8 68

15. For the watershed shown in Figure Q1(b) below and data given in Table Q1(b), estimate
the areal precipitation using Isohyetal, Thiessen and Arithmetic method.
