The contribution of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in terms of human success.

Many people are debating about the secret of human happiness and

fullfillment. Psychologist have proposed that understanding the emotions of

oneself and others is the key to satisfying life. People who are self aware and

sensitive to others manage their affairs with wisdom and grace even in adverse

circumstances. On the other hand, those who are “ emotionally illitterate” blunder

their way through lives marked by misunderstandings, frustrations, and failed

relationships. A scientific understanding of this emotional intelligence may allow

to train our emotional skills so that we can live a more fullfilling and productive

lives (Matthews et.al., 2004). Emotional Intelligence is the ability of a person to

monitor his own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them

and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions ( Salovey &

Mayer, 1990).

Since other people lacks awareness of emotional intelligence, they tend to

be more focused on being smart than understanding their own self and the

emotions of the people around them.

IQ alone is not enough for an individual to be successful. Developing

emotional intelligence has high contributions on an individuals academic

achievements, career success, financial success and effective leadership.

Academic Achievements

Emotional intelligence(EQ) triumphs IQ primarily in those soft domains

like academic achievements, where intellect is less relevant for success. For

example, emotional self regulation and empathy may be more helpful than purely

cognitive ability (Goleman, 1995).

Best academic training from a top university does not matter. A person

with less education who fully developed emotional intelligence can be far more

successful than an educated person. IQ will help personally but EQ will benefit

everyone around (Jensen, 2012).

Career Success

The use of emotional intelligence (EI) for career selection and placement

purposes is very common in the western world organization. A lot of companies

are realizing that emotional intelligence skills appear of vital component of any

organizations management philosophy (Matthews et al., 2004).

The important role of EQ plays a quest for happy and professional life.

Quest for career advancement are primed for future success worldwide. “EQ is so

critical to success that it accounts for 58 percent of performance in all types of

Jobs.” (Bradbeary & Greaves, 2009).

Emotions regulation processes allows a person to induce and sustain a

positive affective state, which subsequently promotes helping behavior and

motivation and ultimately job performance. (Joseph & Newman, 2010)

Financial success

Most people with high EQ earns more money with an average of 29,000

dollar more per year than people with low EQ. The connection of EQ and finacial

earnings is direct that every point increase in EQ, adds 1300 dollar salary per

year. These findings were true to all industries in every nation (Bradbeary &

Greaves, 2009).

According to research carried out by Canresie Institute of Technology,

85 percent of your financial success is due to skills in “human engineering”, your

personality and ability to communicate, negotiate and lead. Only 15 percent is due

to technical knowledge. Instead of exclusively focusing on conventional

intelligence qoutient you should strengthen your EQ. This may be difficult but the

significance is far greater than IQ. (Jensen, 2012)

Effective Leadership

It was accepted that skills like active listening has great impact on how

people respond to their leaders. If they feel valued, they are motivated to achive

goals set by leadership. Emotional intelligence is what keeps us from making

good desicion and interact with people even if a person is undergoing a lot of

stress but continues to practice effective leadership.Understanding other peoples

motivation builds stronger bonds , which makes people with high emotional

intelligence a better leader. Good leaders recognizes the needs of his people to

encourage high performance and workplace satisfaction. Emotionally intelligent

leader builds strong bonds by utillizing emotional diversity that benefits the whole

team. (Scuderi, 2013)

Emotional intelligence plays a vital part in succesful leadership. People

often get promoted for showing their technical expertise but it is emotional

intelligence that determines how well they will succeed as leaders. Reflecting

your own experience with leaders you’ve known will tell you this is true. (Wall,

2007)“...individuals with strong leadership potential also tend to be more

emotionally intelligent, suggesting that a high EQ is an important quality for

business leaders and managers to have.” (Cherry, 2014).

High IQ is not necessary to predict executive competence and success

because it does not guarantee that you will standout above everyone else ( Jensen,

2012). Emotional intelligence may enable an individual to tune into others’

feelings permiting a degree of responsiveness to other people. ( Feldman, 2008).

Ones success and happiness in life depends on many other factors like ability to

relate to people and understanding ones emotion. Lives of greatest leaders does

not depend only on IQ. The ability to inspire people creates emotional connection

in which EQ allows people to connect with their dreams and aspirations. Good

EQ is a higher state of evolution than having good IQ (Gupta, 2013).
