LABORATORY SESSION 2
“STUDY OF MONOPOLE ANTENNAS”

REGISTRATION NUMBER: 2017/E/

DATE:
APPARATUS:
Interface
Transmitter tower
Receiver tower
EAN-1. Antennas kit:
- Monopole antenna
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of the practical exercise is to study the basic principles of monopole antennas.
We will see the omnidirectional radiation pattern of a monopole antenna.
PROCEDURE:
NOTE: Refer to the section “Unit Operation” general procedures to work with the unit.
1. First of all, take the monopole antenna from the antenna kit and mount it on vertical
position (with the antenna looking at the receptor antenna).
2. Check that the transmitter and receiver tower are 1.5 meters distance from each other.
Verify that both antennas are aligned.
3. Check that the degree indicator over the degree disc is in the 0º position.
4. Check that each element is connected to the corresponding connector.
5. Verify that the circuit breaker at the back of the unit is in the “ON” position, switch on
the unit.
6. Open the EANC software and press the ‘START’ button.
7. Choose in the “Antenna test” the “Antenna Radiation Pattern”. Choose in the “Antenna
Type” the “Monopole Antenna”.
8. Push the “START TEST” button and wait until the software indicates that the test is
finished.
9. Press the “Print Plot” Button to save the results of the practice or represent the data
obtained on the polar diagram (elevation plane of the monopole antenna) of the
worksheet included below.
10. Now, mount the antenna on vertical position and push the “START TEST” button
again. Wait until the software indicates that the test is finished.
11. Observe the elevation plane and azimuthal plane diagrams
DISCUSSION
Confirm the omnidirectional characteristic of the monopole antenna and compare the radiation
pattern obtained experimentally with the theoretical pattern.

UNIT OPERATION
A basic setting up of the unit is necessary before carrying out the practical exercises

1. First of all take the antenna from the antenna kit that will be characterized. Mount the antenna
on the corresponding vertical or horizontal holder as required in the practical exercise.
2. To protect the wires and improve the results of the EANC put the wires in the wire holders
along the antenna tower receptor and antenna tower transmitter (as show in the image below).
3. Check that the transmitter and receiver tower are 1.5 meters distance from each other. Verify
that both antennas are aligned.
4. Check that the degree indicator over the degree disc is in the 0º position.
5. Connect the antenna to be characterized to the “RF generator output” connector.
6. Connect the stepper motor to the “Motor controller” connector.
7. Connect the receiver antenna to the “RF input” connector.
8. Verify that the circuit breaker at the back of the unit is in “ON” position. Switch on the unit.
9. Open the EANC software.
10. Choose the Antenna test required in the practical exercise
11. If the antenna test type is an antenna radiation pattern, choose the appropriate antenna in
the “Antenna Type”
12. Push the “START” and ‘START TEST’ buttons to start the test.
13. Wait while the software turned on the “Test finished indicator”.
14. Push the “Print Plot” Button to save the result of the practice.
