System Requirements
-------------------

Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed
below. If your computer doesn't match up to most of these requirements,
you may have problems in using the contents of the CD.

* A PC with a Pentium or faster processor, or a Mac OS computer with a

68040 or faster processor.

* Microsoft Windows 98 or later, or Mac OS system software 8.1 or

later.

* At least 16 MB of total RAM installed on your computer. For best

performance, we recommend least 32 MB of RAM installed.

* A CD-ROM drive

* A monitor capable of displaying at least 256 colors or grayscale.

To install the items from the CD to your hard drive, follow these steps:

1. Insert the CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.

point-and-click way to explore the contents of the CD.

If the CD-ROM interface does not appear, follow these steps to access
the CD:

1. Click the Start button on the left end of the taskbar and then
choose Run from the menu that pops up.

How to use the CD using the Mac OS
----------------------------------

To install the items from the CD to your hard drive, follow these steps.
1. Insert the CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.

In a moment, an icon representing the CD you just inserted appears

on your Mac desktop. Chances are, the icon looks like a CD-ROM.

2. Double click the CD icon to show the CD's contents.

3. Double click the file called License.txt.

This file contains the end-user license that you agree to by using
the CD. When you are done reading the license, you can close the
window that displayed the file.

4. Double click the Read Me First icon.

This text file contains information about the CD's programs and any
last-minute instructions you need to know about installing the
programs on the CD that we don't cover in this appendix.

5. Most programs come with installers-with those you simply open the
program's folder on the CD, and double click the icon with the
words "Install" or "Installer," or sometimes "sea" (for self-
extracting archive).

6. If you don't find an installer, just drag the program's folder from
the CD window and drop it on your hard drive icon.

What You'll Find on the CD
--------------------------

Software
--------

You can find the following software on your CD:

Excel Viewer
Excel Viewer is a freeware viewer that allows you to view, but not edit,
most Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Certain features of Microsoft Excel
documents may not work as expected from within Excel Viewer.

Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader is a freeware viewer that allows you to view, but not edit,
Adobe PDF files.

OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org is a free multi-platform office productivity suite. It is
similar to Microsoft Office or Lotus SmartSuite, but OpenOffice.org is
absolutely free. It includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation,
and drawing applications that enable you to create professional
documents, newsletters, reports, and presentations. It supports most
file formats of other office software. You should be able to edit and
view any files created with other office solutions.

<TechnicalStuff>
Shareware programs are fully functional, free trial versions of
copyrighted programs. If you like particular programs, register with
their authors for a nominal fee and receive licenses, enhanced versions,
and technical support. Freeware programs are free, copyrighted games,
applications, and utilities. You can copy them to as many PCs as you
like -- free -- but they have no technical support. GNU software is
governed by its own license, which is included inside the folder of the
GNU software. There are no restrictions on distribution of this
software. See the GNU license for more details. Trial, demo, or
evaluation versions are usually limited either by time or functionality
(such as being unable to save projects).

Chapter files
-------------

Simply fill in the blanks, and you're on your way.

* Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files. These files illustrate various examples,

such as a sample brochure or newsletter. You can't change these

If You've Got Problems (Of the CD Kind)
---------------------------------------

I tried my best to compile programs that work on most computers with the
minimum system requirements. Alas, your computer may differ, and some
programs may not work properly, for some reason.

The two likeliest problems are that you don't have enough memory (RAM)
for the programs you want to use, or you have other programs running
that are affecting the installation or running of a program. If you get
error messages like Not enough memory or Setup cannot continue, try one
or more of these methods and then try using the software again:

* Turn off any anti-virus software that you have on your computer.
Installers sometimes mimic virus activity and may make your computer
incorrectly believe that it's being infected by a virus.

* Close all running programs. The more programs you're running, the
less memory is available to other programs. Installers also
typically update files and programs. So if you keep other programs
running, installation may not work properly.

* Have your local computer store add more RAM to your computer. This
is, admittedly, a drastic and somewhat expensive step. However, if
you have a Windows 95 or later PC or a Mac OS computer with a
PowerPC chip, adding more memory can really help the speed of your
computer and allow more programs to run at the same time.
