The Revolution of Stem Cells in Skin Care
By now we all know the
benefits of antioxidants,
peptides and AHA’s in skin
care products but the latest
advancement in the fight
against aging and environ-
mentally damaged skin is
Stem Cell therapy. Scientists
have now found a way to
harness the power of plant stem cells to repair damaged skin
tissue. This advanced technology offers exciting new options to
regenerative skin care products. These tiny little cells offer huge
results, but understanding the difference between human stem
cells and plant stem cells may be key when educating your
patient or client regarding the benefits of stem cell therapy.
Human vs. Plant Stem Cells
Humans have two basic kinds of
stem cells: embryonic stem cells,
which have the power to change
into any differentiated cell type
found anywhere in the body and
adult stem cells, which are generally
more limited and can only evolve
into a specific type of cell found in
the tissue where they are located.
The primary function of these adult
stem cells is maintenance and repair. Unfortunately these cells
diminish in number as we age. Natural cell death occurs due to
chronological aging or environment damage. But there is hope;
research shows that plant stem cells may be the answer.
Plant stem cells depend on epigenetic control and signals from
surrounding cells for their development. Unlike humans, each
plant-derived adult stem cell possesses the ability to generate a
whole new plant. The technique is simple; viable tissue is
obtained from a plant, next, a small cut is made in the plant, then
new cells form on the surface of this cut in an attempt to heal the
wound. A colorless mass of cells form called a callus. The
slowly dividing cells of a callus are undifferentiated cells and lack
the characteristics of normal plant cells. They are essentially
un-programmed and full of potential.
Science Behind Stem Cell Therapy
With this technology, is it then
possible to cultivate these plant stem
cells into beneficial skin care products
for the use of cellular regeneration
and anti-aging? It seems so; scien-
tists have conducted studies, using a
very rare apple called the Uttwiler
Spätlauber, which has a particularly
prolonged ability to stay fresh. The initial studies showed that
only a 0.1% concentration of this apple stem cell extract
stimulated the proliferation of human stem cells by an astound-
ing 80%.1
The scientists also conducted a human study to determine the
anti-wrinkle effectiveness of a skin care product containing a 2%
Uttwiler Spätlauber extract along with lecithin liposomes. This
cream was applied twice daily to the crow’s feet area of 20
participants. Wrinkle depth was reduced by an average of 8%
after just two weeks, and by 15% after four weeks—thus
reducing the signs of aging.
The exciting fact is that the industry continues to research and
develop new and exciting technologies that offer our patients
and clients more advanced, long lasting results. If we, as
professionals want to offer them the most innovative and
beneficial products; stem cell therapy is not the future of the
industry, it’s the “now”.
