1) Title: Magic E

2) Lesson Essential Questions: How does adding a silent e at the end of the word change

the original vowel sound?

3) Standards:

a. Pennsylvania: CC.1.1.K.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis

skills in decoding words.

b. New Jersey: RF.K.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills

in decoding and encoding words.

4) Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Students will be able to read words with Objective will be observed through group

and without silent e work and choral response

Students will be able to identify which Objective will be measured through a

words need and do not need a silent e worksheet

5) Materials:

a. Magic wand

b. Place to write (whiteboard and marker, or pad and paper)

6) Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge


a. Students will already be informed on the two types of vowel sounds, short and

long. Students may have already had exposure to the silent e, making this lesson

serve as a form of review.

7) Lesson Beginning

a. Teacher will conduct magic trick at the front of the class, then ask the students if

they’d like to see another trick. For the second trick, teacher will write three

letter word on the board (ex: kit) and change the word by adding the silent e,

causing the vowel to say its name and magically changing the word. Students will

then be invited up to also perform this magic trick.

a. Differentiation:

a. Students who finish the worksheet ahead of time will be asked to draw a picture

on the back of the worksheet of two words, one with and one without the silent

e. For example, rob and robe.

b. Questions:

a. What is a short vowel? What sound does it make?


b. What is a long vowel? What sound does it make?

c. How does adding a silent e change the word?

d. Can you read the word with and without a magic e?

c. Classroom Management:

a. Teacher will ask for the student’s respect while she and others are speaking

b. Teacher will ask for the student’s best work and behavior

c. Teacher will use the star system for especially well behaving and misbehaving

students

d. Transitions:

a. Teacher will ask the students to hop, skip, or shuffle back to their seats from the

carpet.

9) Closure:

a. Teacher will congratulate the students on being excellent magicians, and remind

them to be on the lookout for the magic e in their free reading and kid writing.
