Dear Judges:

My names is Jakob Devlin. I am a junior here at St. James High School, and I am 17 years old.
Throughout my experience here at St. James I feel like I have learned so much. With all the
courses I have taken and extracurricular activities I have participated in, I feel that St. James
High School has adequately prepared me for graduation and the real world. During my time at
St. James High School I have been a member of the varsity lacrosse team all three years, and
plan to play again next year. I have taken all honors courses offered to me and taken 4 different
advanced placement courses. I feel that I have challenged myself heavily while taking on these
challenging courses as a student athlete.

For my topic I chose to focus on the underlying problems with United States infrastructure and
what needs to be done to fix it. I chose this topic because I would like to major in Civil
Engineering at the college I attend. A civil engineer is an engineer that deals with the design,
construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. In other words,
they are the ones responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the United States
infrastructure. I learned from my research that the United State’s infrastructure is in terrible
condition and needs renewal. After studying this topic, I feel that I have great background
knowledge for studying civil engineering at a university. This will help tremendously in my
future.

This senior exploration project was a great personal experience for me. As I began my research
on infrastructure, I didn’t initially know that the status of US infrastructure was so poor. This
sparked an interest in me to find out why our country’s infrastructure is so poor and what can be
done to fix it. The senior exploration project was a great experience this year because it gave me
great insight on what I want to do later on in life.

Thank you judges for your time and involvement with the senior exploration project. I appreciate
you letting me present this topic to you. I hope that from viewing my portfolio and presentation
that you gained knowledge on this important issue with our country’s infrastructure. It was such
a great experience, and I am glad I participated.
