Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter on behalf of the Wildlife Research Club of University of
North Carolina Charlotte. We are a school club with student who have interest toward
wildlife and seek to research on animals as career. In fact, we would like to organize a
club event to visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to research on the black
bears in America since this location was known as one of the biggest habitat of black
bears in America. Therefore, we would like to make a reservation on your camp site
during our spring break period which is from 5th of March to 9th of March. If the date is
available for reservation, I would like to ask a couple questions regarding the park and
the black bears.
Questions regarding the park information:
Since there are a couple of campsites in different location within the park. In order to get Formatted: Indent: First line: 0"
the best result on researching black bears, we would like to choose a site with more bear
presence. Therefore, we would like to have some information regarding on the bear
presence in the sites, Besides the location, the cost information will help us in terms of
planning since finance is one of our most important work in preparation. Therefore, the
main questions in this part will be
1. Which site will be best for us to conduct our research on black bears?
2. What is the cost on reservation for 4 days with 9 people in different
campsites?
Questions regarding safety:
Furthermore, as the black bears are known as one of the most dangerous bear
species in the world, the safety precaution must be done before starting our research on
them. Therefore, I have gathered several questions from our clubmates on the safety
during the contact with these bears:
1. What is the safest distance to keep between us and the bear?
2. What should we do when bears approach?
3. Should we “play dead” when bear approach?
One of our biggest concern is the safety distance to keep between us and the bear since
bear. As researchers, we would like to get in touch with this bear in the nearest distance.
However, we also know that may cause us danger, so we hope this can be answered.
Besides the safety distance, we also have another concern on the action we should take if
the bears approach us, since the behavior of the bears are unpredictable, they can be
really aggressive if we do something that may upset them. Apart from it, we also hope
you can clarify a rumor that if the bear sees us as a prey, ‘play dead’ will work for getting
us out of trouble is true, since this rumor can be found in all over the internet but there is
no credible source to prove it.
Last but not least, I would like to thank for your patience on reading and response
to this letter. Your response on this letter will help us a lot in terms of planning for the
field trip in the Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Churk Kei Tai
President of the Wildlife Research Club in UNCC
