MST Joy School AFPS

Class KG 2 Date February 22, 2018

Overall aim and context of the lesson

The English lesson was about the long and the short vowel I, the aim of this lesson was to let the
students identify words with long and short vowel I, to compare between them and understand the
difference. The lesson contained a matching game at the beginning to review the vowels, furthermore ,
students had a classifying activity where they had to pick a word and classify it as long or short I word,
each one of them got the chance to pick and put one word on the board.

SWC Lesson Reflection

Select (S):

The “I” vowel English lesson included words with short and long vowel I, it had a revision at the
beginning of the class about the five vowels and their short/ long sounds. During introducing the lesson
for 25 minutes long, I wanted to address the whole class and each one individual understanding of the
vowels. During the activities which teacher Joy was responsible of , she was addressing the group work.
We had mixed ability students in each group, with a reason that each one of them will help their
classmates.

Describe (D):

The lesson takes place in Al Alfiah Filipino Private School [AFPS], on February 22, 2018. I t was
prepared for Kg 2 students who are 4 -6 years old and was made after a collaboration with the English
teacher, where we had a discussion of what is best for the students and what is suitable for them. I was
trying to let the students identify the long and the short I vowel’s words, identify the sounds of the five
vowels, and to develop students understanding of vowels topic. Students were able to understand the
lesson easily since they have knowledge of the topic, some students were participating other s were
playing around since it’s something they know. However, the student’s enjoyed the classifying activities
only when their turn comes. The matching activity was too easy for them, so I have to pick the LA
students to do the activity, which I didn’t I only picked maybe 2-3 LA students.

Analyze (A):

I think that the students lost the interest of hearing the teacher (I) teaching a subject they’re already
aware of, some students were participating because they already know the answer, or because some of
them didn’t know enough about the subject which they saw that this lesson had new things and
information, other students lost interest because they couldn’t participate in everything and another
reason is that children have a very short attention span and that attention was taken at the first period
where their teacher and MST read them a story, so they couldn’t focus more on the lesson. The lesson
was very well related to the students’ prior understanding, it was easy for the students to not make effort
to understand. Students were only engaged during the songs, the classifying game when only their turn
comes, otherwise the engaging didn’t work very well, even this time they didn’t mind the bell or stand/
sit-down game like last time.

Appraise (A):

Students were excited before their chances of participating in the lesson was taken away, they enjoyed
dancing to the “hello” song and they were focused on the vowels song. Students felt boredom from
getting a lesson on a subject they know and it’s not on a high level, the students are very smart so I
needed more complex lesson for them. However , I did meet my goals, by the end of the lesson students
were able to know words with vowel I and understand them.

Transform (T):

In future, my lesson should make the students more competitive, it should be more attractive, fun, and
more complex so the student won’t feel uninterested. The lesson should have more engaging parts,
different activities for each group so that each one of them is focused on doing som ething and not moving
around while the others are busy. Students should get an appropriate lesson of their understanding. I
should practice bringing my voice higher, changing the tone of my voice, having more and different
facial expressions. I have to develop my classroom management strategies and find new ones, one of
them is keeping students busy and give them more hands -on activities with different levels.
