Sihinayata Piyapath
We, the UoM Leos correlate
with the development of
education sector of children
in rural areas, with the
intention of enhancing their
mathematical and leadership
skills. All what we desire is
to show them how to dream
big and give wings to those
big dreams, in the name of
education.
This project series “Sihinayata Piyapath”
was conducted continuously to encourage
students who are going to sit for the G.C.E. O/L
examination this year.
The successful 8th phase of the project
series was conducted on 3rd November at
Thulhiriya Dharmasiri Senanayaka school,
Kegalle. There, we discussed the mathematical
problems targeting the G.C.E. Ordinary Level
exam paper and taught them some easy ways
to answer the questions while paying attention
to each student as much as possible. This was
carried out successfully throughout the day and
we hope that our effort was a huge strength to
them.

There is a cylindrical water tank at one Gamaralas’ place
which is having an inlet pipe at the top and an outlet pipe at
the bottom of the tank. Gamarala knows that usually it takes
4 hours to fill the whole tank and to indicate high level at the
level sensor indicator.
Further it takes 6 hours to discharge the whole tank. One
day Gamarala open the inlet valve to fill up the empty tank.
However, by a mistake Gamarala had forgot to close the outlet
valve. Then, how many hours will it take to indicate high level.
Hint: assume that the outlet flow rate dose not vary with the
water level of the tank. The meaning of high level is that the
tank is totally filled.

Apeksha
Uncertainty is a common
phenomenon of the world.
But should we discourage
ourselves due to this? On
11th of November 2017
we, the Leos of university
of Moratuwa taught that
anything beyond our control
is not something to suffer, by
holding a project with kids in
cancer hospital.
This project was held from 9
a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at play house
in kids’ ward of Maharagama
cancer hospital. Classical
music society of University
of Moratuwa contributed
equally in this project with
Leos. Some fun activities and
a musical program were held
for little kids and to finalize
the program we donated
some essential medicines for
the treatments to the hospital.
Though we can’t get what
we choose in every moment
of life, it’s nothing wrong in
expecting good to happen. In
some moments expectations
can do miracles. We expected
something good through
the project “Apksha”. That
moment was valuable for
those innocent kids and for
us too.

Firm Stance
Leos are the young people who have the necessity to build their own capabilities
and talents while serving to the society. So, for every Leo club, it is must to
have a work plan for its own members skill development. If not, leader who
will be needed for the future of our nation will not come out from the clubs.
For the Leostic year 2017/2018 Leo club of University of Moratuwa planned
a member’s skill development program which was named as Firm stance.
Second phase of this continues effort was held on 16th of November from
6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Department of Electronics and telecommunication,
University of Moratuwa. It was an interesting program on public speaking,
which was conducted by our own senior Leo, Leo Chathura Kodippily.

There are many reasons why public

speaking is important. Communication
is the backbone of our society. It allows
us to form connections, influence
decisions, and motivate change.
Without communication skills, the
ability to progress in the working
world and in life, itself, would be
nearly impossible. The ability to
speak publicly is not only important,
but essential to make forward strides.
Basically, the program was prearranged
to give a correct awareness about
public speaking to Leos and prospect
and giving necessary knowledge on
How to do effective presentations. It
was chaired by Leo Udara Chethiya
Bandara and more than 20 Leos, Leo
prospects were benefited from the
event.

Do you know
Earth is the densest planet in the solar
system. Earth’s mass is 6.6 sextillion tons
(5.9722 x 1024 kilograms). Earth radius
is the approximate distance from Earth’s
center to its surface, about 6,371 km. Its
equal to 723 times of the Everest mountain
elevation. So, if the planet is a volleyball
Everest will be having a height of 0.9mm.
Even hard to see from the naked eye.
The Earth revolves around the Sun at a speed of about 3,000m/sec
and its self-spinning speed is 460 m/sec. All together equator moves
with a speed of 3460m/sec. But we don’t feel any when we are on the
earth.

A story to remember
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 years old
boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a
glass of water in front of him.
“How much is an ice cream sundae?”
“50 cents,” replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number
of coins in it.
“How much is a dish of plain ice cream?” he inquired. Some people
were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient.
“35 cents,” she said brusquely.
The little boy again counted the coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,”
he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and
walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and
departed.
When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and
then swallowed hard at what she saw.
There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were 15 cents – her tip.

Kindness is something that we must spread

without any consideration of age, cast or
religion. The people we meet during our
lifetime will always not be the same. But
without knowing them properly, jumping
into conclusions is something that we
should not do. A simple instance is enough
for a person to become an angel to our
lives. Be considerate, kind and angelic to
others, in return you will meet angels as
heavens are not far from us.

“Drug use prevention is the best treatment and it COST LESS in
LIVES and DOLLARS”
-Frank Kelly-

Addiction to drugs can erase happiness and peace from a life. But unfortunately,
drug addiction is spreading like a disease among the school children today.
An effort to suppress this tragedy is being launched as a drug prevention
program, aiming the schools island wide. The organization of the project was
done by the Leo Club of University of Moratuwa together with the National
Dangerous Drug Control Board. The inaugural ceremony of this program
was successfully conducted, simultaneously, with the Service Project
‘Hadagesma’ on 18th of November at Kallagama Navodya Vidyalaya.

This program will continue under different phases in the future, conducting
with the intention of saving the younger generation from the illusion they are
falling in. It’s a responsibility of ours, to save the future of our country.
