Politics in the 1950’s Timeline
● 1950- Harry Truman ordered the US Army to start to make the atomic bomb,
during this time the Korean War was starting
● 1951- Harry Truman signed the peace treaty with Japan that officially ended
WWII and Winston Churchill took reins as the British Prime Minister
● 1952- Britain's Princess Elizabeth became queen at age 25 after the death of her
father, King George VI. Also seat belts were introduced and the vaccine for polio
was invented
● 1953- Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin died. Also Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were
executed for espionage.
● 1954- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation was illegal in the Brown v.
Board of Education decision.
● 1955- The refusal by Rosa Parks to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, and
the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Timeline Continued
● 1956- The world saw the explosion of the Hungarian Revolution and the Suez
Crisis. This caused some conflict
● 1957- The Soviets were the first to launch of a Satellite into space, the name of the
satellite
● 1958- The Chinese leader named Mao Tse-tung launched a plan named the Great
Leap Forward
● 1959- Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution, had been named the dictator
of Cuba and had brought communism to the caribbean
1st Major Event- Korean War Begins
This was one of the first major wars since the end of World War II. This war was about
what type of government should be in Korea, North Korea wanted the government to
be communism, while South Korea wanted the government to be capitalist, this caused
major conflicts and it eventually lead to a war. What happened is that the two sided
fought for 3 years, and officially nobody won the war, they divided Korea at the 38th
parrell and made the North communist, and the south capitalist (at the time). This
event was important because it was the 1st major war after WWII.
2nd Major Event- Threat of Nuclear Fusion
Following WWII, the US and the Soviet Union had done there research and started to
develop thermonuclear weapons that could wipe out an entire city, these weapons
were extremely powerful. Before these weapons were made, nuclear fission weapons
could only take out a small scale of towns, Thermonuclear weapons reached a pinnacle
when the Soviet Tsar Bomba test in 1961, which held 57 megatons of TNT. These
weapons were important because they could have changed the way that war went.
3rd Major Event- The 22nd Amendment
In 1951, an amendment was passed stating that presidents could only serve 2 terms in
office. This Amendment was passed due to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
getting elected into office for his 3rd term. He won the Presidential Elections in 1932,
1936, and 1940. This is important because it can show that there can be different
leadership in office and that anyone was wants to be elected into office has the
opportunity to.
1st Major Person- Harry Truman
Harry Truman was the 33rd President of the United States. He became president after
Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in office. He was the President during the 1950s and
he was leading America to fight for Korea during the Korean War. Harry Truman is
important because he lead America through a war and when Roosevelt died he took
over a big role in office.
2nd Major Person- Dwight D Eisenhower
Dwight D Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States, he was the
president who came in and replaced Harry Truman when he left office. Dwight D
Eisenhower lead a big invasion on the Nazi powered Europe. While he was president,
he dealt with Cold War Tensions with the Soviet Union. He was very important
because he was in charge when america needed him most and helped us in the cold
war.
3rd Major Person- Nikita Khrushchev
Nikita Khrushchev was a leader of the Soviet Union during the cold war. He led the
Soviet Union after the death of Joseph Stalin, he increased the tensions between the
US and USSR with his belief of Communism. He proclaimed his tensions with the US
say that “We will bury you”. He is an important figure because he showed what he
believed the USSR to be and he wanted to be a strong leader.

Effects in the 1950’s
The effect that politics had in the 1950’s was major, there many bombs and there were
many conflicts that arose during the 1950’s. These event had caused many things to
happen in the future. These leaders were put in a tough spot when they were put into
office and they all helped the US in many ways. They helped the US through war and
conflicts with other Countries. In all, the 1950’s was a crazy time in the political world
and the US pulled through for it and that makes us a very tough country.
