OVERVIEW:

Students will listen to the
story Only One You, by
Linda Kranz, and create
their own unique fish
using crayons and
watercolor paint. The
students will learn the
lesson, “There’s only one
you in this great big world.
Make it a better place”

OBJECTIVES:
 Students will listen aloud to teacher reading Only One You by Linda Kranz.
  Students will create his/her own unique fish using the elements of art, such as line,
color, and shape.
 Students will reflect on the lessons learned from the story, by having a small class
discussion.

ASSESSMENT: I will ask students what they learned from the book Only One You. What
themes/ morals come out of this story? Ask the students the essential questions as a closure
during the lesson. How can we make the world a better place? What makes each of us unique
from one another?

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
Day 1:
 The teacher will first introduce the story, Only One You by Linda Kranz. The teacher will
read the story to the students, and have them pay close attention to the illustrations in
the story. Students will also pay attention to the themes or lessons that the book is
trying to teach.
 Students will be asked
to name some of the
lessons learned in the
story.
 Students will each get
their own piece of
watercolor paper, and
be instructed to draw a
big oval with crayon on
the paper that fills the
entire page.
 Next, the teacher will
demonstrate how to
draw the fish’s eye and mouth.
Day 2:
 Students will have the freedom to design their unique fish however they want using
their box of crayons.
 After drawing their designs on their fish, students will use watercolor paint and paint
their fish with different colors in each section of their fish.
 The teacher will talk with the students about wax resist, and using crayons and
watercolor together on one piece.
Day 3:
 Students will finish painting their fish with watercolor, and cut out their fish from the
paper.
