MAP OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic is divided administratively into provinces and a National


District where the national capital is located (Santo Domingo de Guzmán). The

POPULATION

The population of the Dominican Republic in 2018 estimated by the United Nations
is 10.6 billion people, ranking 82nd among the 193 nations in the world. In that
year, approximately 5% of the population was over 65 years of age, while 35% of
the population was under 15 years of age. There were 103 men for every 100
women in the country in 2016. According to the Dominican government, the
population density in 2007 was 192 per km², and 63% of the population lived in
urban areas. The coastal plains of the south and the Cibao Valley are the most
densely populated areas of the country. The capital city, Santo Domingo, had a
population of 3 014 000 in 2007. Other important cities are Santiago de los
Caballeros (756,098 inhabitants), La Romana (population 250,000), San Pedro de
Macoris, San Francisco de Macorís, Puerto Plata and La Vega. According to the
United Nations, the growth rate of the urban population for the period 2000-2005
was 2.3%.

LANGUAGE

The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish, used together with the
Antillean form in the everyday language. In its lexicon you can find African
influences (Africanisms), foreigners coming essentially from the English of the
United States and also neologisms that clash with the maintained archaisms of
ancient Spanish. As for his accent, he remembers Canary Spanish.

HIGHEST MOUNTAIN/PICK

Pico Duarte: Pico Duarte is a mountain that belongs to the Cordillera Central and
is the highest peak of the Greater Antilles. It is usually visited by a large number of
brigades and schools in the Dominican Republic. Pico Duarte and Pico la Pelona,
are twin peaks. According to some current topographical data, the two mountains
have the same altitude of 3087 meters above sea level, however, measurements
made with altimeters suggest that the La Pelona Peak is a few meters less than
Pico Duarte.

The Pelona: The Pelone Peak, has 3,085 meters of altitude, only a few meters
less than the Pico Duarte, and is at a distance of 1.5 km from it. La Pelona is
located in the province of San Juan de la Maguana, right in the J. A. Bermúdez
National Park, located in the Central Mountain Range.

Pico Diego De Ocampo: The Diego de Ocampo is the highest peak of the
Northern Cordillera and is located in the province of Santiago de los Caballeros. It
has an altitude of about 2,220 meters above sea level.

Isabel De Torres: The Isabel de Torres Peak is located south of the city of Puerto
Plata, this mountain has a height of 990 meters.

Loma Quita Espuela: The natural reserve known as Quita Espuela has 72.5 km²
and is composed by the peaks Loma Quita Espuela with a height of 985 m, Loma
Vieja with a height of 730 m, Loma El Quemado with 565 m of height, Loma La
Canela with an altitude of 560 m and Los Sabrosos with about 510 m of altitude.

Sierra De Bahoruco: The Sierra de Bahoruco is a depopulated mountain, due to


its steep relief. In this mountain range there are mountains with more than 2,000
meters of altitude. The highest peak is located in the part of the Dominican territory
and is called Loma del Toro, which is near the border with the Republic of Haiti,
and has a height of 2,367 meters above sea level. The Sierra de Bahoruco has an
approximate extension of about 70 km, and is oriented in a Northwest-Southeast
direction, it is located in the provinces of Independencia, Pedernales and
Barahona.

Monte Nalga De Maco: Pico Nalga de Maco, consists of two peaks, and is located
in the Cordillera Central just south of the municipality Los Almácigos, Santiago
Rodriguez province. This mountain and its surroundings have been declared a
National Park since 1995 and covers a territorial extension of 278 km2.

Colonial City of Santo Domingo: Located in the heart of the capital of the
Dominican Republic, on the edge of the Ozama River, it corresponds to the first

Los Haitises National Park: Located at the foot of the Bay of Samaná,
corresponds to another of the natural jewels of the Dominican Republic, a national
park of 1,600 square kilometers, famous for its set of hills or "mogotes" that reach
heights of up to 40 meters, covered by lush tropical forests.

The landscape of Los Haitises, also includes small bays, virgin beaches, cays and
mangroves, which make home to an impressive biodiversity of species, in addition
to numerous natural caves, where the Taíno culture left pictographs and
petroglyphs. The entrance to the park is usually done by the coastal town of
Sabana de la Mar, from where boats leave, which run through the main sites of Los
Haitises.

Punta Cana: With its 50 kilometers of paradisiacal beaches, Punta Cana is

Isla Saona: Located off the coast of Bayahibe, within the Cotubanamá National
Park, it corresponds to one of the largest islands of the Dominican Republic,
famous for its dreamy beaches, where they combine white sands, turquoise waters
and coral reefs. The most famous among them is Canto de Agua.

Eagles Bay: Finishing the ranking of the best tourist places in the Dominican
