Slide 1 (intro)

I remember when I want to be an English teacher; I want my students to learn English like how I
manage learn it. But being teachers in an estate or rural however is very challenging. I remember walking
into the classroom and introduce myself in a British accent trying to impress them and hoping to see
sparkle in their eyes. But the room was silent; I can hear the sound of the birds singing outside the
window up in the sky. 1 student raised her hand and said in Malay Language: CIkgu, tak faham, boleh tak
cakap bahasa Melayu? Yes, they don’t understand and want me to rephrase my speech into local
language. Hello everyone, my name is Mustafa Kamal and I am an English teacher from SMK LKTP
BELITONG, KLUANG JOHORE MALAYSIA.

Slide 2 (The Classroom)

As teacher I always come out with different strategies in classroom that suite my students
English proficiency level. And in Malaysia we did not just teach in classroom but also outside the
classroom like sport, dance and club. It is because of my passion in teaching English and also Cultural
activity that made me as one of the Korea – Malaysia teacher exchange programme 2016. My favourite
quote in life is; ‘There is no such thing as cant, only wont.’ My 3 months experience in Korea was such an
eye opener. The impact of this programme had gave me such a huge impactin 2017. One of the things
that I can’t forget was when I saw English textbook for middle school and of course the learning tools
that comes with it. I started using it and also comparing the textbook that has been used here and
Malaysian English textbook. I found that Korean English textbook contain International elements in it. So
this year I start to use my English syllabus and design a few lesson plans that is more international. I
learn this from the connecting classroom done in my Korean host school connecting classroom activities.
Yes, there is no such thing as cant, only wont. If we want the student to be more critical thinking be more
confident in communicating with foreigners, we must prepare them with all sorts of materials and
broadening our teaching perspective. I can’t deny the fact that all these years not even once I integrate
international value in my classroom. Global Citizenship Education also something new to our country. It
had been highlight by Dato Seri Mahadzhir bin Khalid, Minister of Education of Malaysia during his
speech on May 2017. I had tried using GCED elements in my form 2 Classroom, and their interest in
classroom is absolutely increasing. From personal assignment and Group presentation, whenever I
assigned them to Global issues, they gave 100% attention and dedication towards completing it. Not only
that, Our Korean host school and Mentor teacher keep on continuing our relationship by planning a Visit
to my country and also sharing thought and idea in planning many things.

Slide 3 (The Visit)

It is something that we dare to imagine & dream of. K-Pop culture is very popular in Malaysia.
Since I got back to Malaysia after the programme, I had been idolized by teachers and students locally. A
rural area teacher teaching in Korea. My reputation has been increasing ever since. And when I drop the
bomb announcing the the mentor teacher and 12 students will visit our school, and 12 students from my
school will be their partner throughout the visit, it seems like all student upgrading their English to be
the luck chosen one. Another impact that I love about this programme is of course learning views about
our own country from other people. Planning for the visit was not easy discussion after discussion and of
course financial is an issue back in my place. We did not have enough financial even though the host
school said the can pay for everything, but being Malaysian, we want to provide some courtesy. I attend
a meeting with Parent teacher Association (PTA) and also involving the community as well. Everything
went on smoothly and we manage to build enough financial and support for the projects. Free
accommodation by choosing Foster Family and let the Korean students experience Malaysia way of
living. Free Food sponsors by the PTA and financial support to hold a Grand farewell dinner. It’s amazing
how Social Media help our school during the Visit. Also on our way sending them to the airport, I gave
them another surprise which is doing a photo shoot with My Hanbok Collection. Yes, I manage to make 6
girls Hanbok and 4 boys Hanbok. This was my personal project last year. As a symbol of appreciating and
accepting other culture and to this glorious relationship.

Slide 4 (Future Plan & Hope)

Ladies and Gentlemen’s, Bryan my Ex students last year in yangchon middle school did not get
selected to come to Malaysia. He was sos sad and keep on texting me telling how sad he was. And how I
wish I could have the power to change it. However the thing that he said touches me the most was;
‘Don’t worry teacher mus, I will study hard and get a good job, and I will come to Malaysia.’ So in 2018 I
want to bring few of my students and teachers to visit our Host school in Incheon. I want them to
experience the things that I had experienced. And hopefully the visit will make them said. ‘I want to
study hard and one day I want to come here again’. Since Yanchon middle school visit in August, I see
that my students becoming more ‘Global’. I can see them commenting on the Korean students social
media like facebook and instagram. Maybe for some it’s a small thing but for me, it’s the small thing that
makes such a huge impact. I will plan the visit starting January and hopefully if it all went well; it will be
an inspiration to others. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Malaysian Ministry of Education &
APCEIU for this amazing journey. I genuinely believe that this programme will be the bridge towards
becoming a more civilized country hopefully and of course to be more Global Citizen. Thank You.
