Storage of Nuclear Waste: The House


Y Y Y Y passed, 340-72, a bill to revive a long-
dormant federal plan for permanently storing
radioactive waste from active and retired
nuclear power plants in 39 states in a
repository at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain. A
yes vote was to send HR 3053 to the Senate.
Local Veto of Waste Storage: Voting 80
N N N N -332, the House defeated an amendment to
HR 3053 (above) that sought to require
federal authorities to obtain approval from an
array of state and local jurisdictions before
they could designate Yucca Mountain as the
repository for U.S. nuclear waste.
Auto Lending Bias: The House voted, 234
Y Y N N -175, to repeal a Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau action against auto lending
that imposes higher interest rates on minority
borrowers. A yes vote backed repeal on
grounds the bureau is barred by law from
regulating auto dealers. (SJ Res 57)
Limiting Antitrust Enforcement: The House
Y Y N N repealed, 230-185, the Federal Trade
Commission’s authority to use administrative
judges as well as federal courts to adjudicate
corporate mergers. A yes vote backed HR
5645, which would strip the FTC of a key
antitrust enforcement tool.
Rising Drug Costs, Corporate Mergers:
N N Y Y The House defeated, 193-220, a bid by
Democrats to prohibit HR 5645 (above) from
applying to proposed corporate mergers that
would lead to unreasonable increases in the
cost of prescription drugs. A yes vote was to
adopt the motion.
Michael Brennan Confirmation: The Senate
N N confirmed, 49-46, Michael B. Brennan to sit
on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals. Backers noted that he received
American Bar Association approval, while
critics said he was too far to the right on
social and incarceration issues.
