My Philosophy of Education

The teaching profession is a remarkably powerful position which has a large role in

educating, nurturing and shaping the people of our nation. It is my responsibility as the teacher to

create a comfortable environment that ensures that all students are treated with equity and respect

throughout their classroom experience, while providing support and the resources necessary to

progress in higher education and become leaders within society.

Purpose of Education

As educators, in more ways than just academia, it is our job to shape the society we live

in through the children that begin their lives and our classroom. Teachers can be strong

influences on the students in the classroom and they have the power to “control their student

success or failure” (Goldstein, 2014, p. 204). I hope to shape my students in the classroom so

they may continue to shape the school, community and greater world. I will build and maintain

positive relationships with students while inspiring them to think critically and make rational

decisions. I will create an environment where teachers, students and staff can work together in

order to achieve fairness and prosperity for everyone's future. I promise to engage students

within their community in order to prevent crime and discrimination; by incorporating

knowledge, and examples of equity and goodwill throughout the community. This will not only

prevent crime but also help reduce poverty and other social justice problems within the

community. Lastly, I hope to create strong minded, independent individuals who are willing to

listen, collaborate, compromise and be understanding of others.

Learning Environment

I will have an inclusive classroom to ensure that all students are working collaboratively

and learning from each other. I will be a culturally relevant teacher who encourages students to

share their culture and combine their new knowledge with academia to ensure a bridge is formed

connecting the two. As Ladson-Billings (1995) stated, a culturally relevant teacher utilizes

students’ culture as a vehicle for learning. I will equally encourage students to learn and develop

both the English language as well as their native language in a multilingual classroom to ensure

equity in and outside the classroom. In order to accomplish this, I create an open classroom for

parents as well, so they can build comfort within the school system as they are actively involved

with the students’ future success.

Commitment to Social Justice

I will be able to accomplish my vision by practicing the teaching of equity in the

classroom and proactively influencing students to learn with a growth mindset. I will do this with

the help of teachers and staff, parents/guardians and the community. There will be multiple

differences that may threaten the success of academic achievement such as cultural differences,

linguistic barriers, and disabilities: physically and mentally. I will ask for parents’ guidance as I

encounter any barriers with their children to ensure equity so their child has what they need to

succeed. I will try to teach in multiple languages and incorporate multiple learning strategies to

ensure all students are successful. I will be trained to identify and work with all disabilities

including: learning, social, physical and mental. Lastly, I will be prepared to learn with my

students as they openly express themselves in the classroom. I will encourage students to speak

and express themselves freely while being responsible and respectful to themselves and others.

Conclusion

As a transformative teacher I will be flexible in my ways of teaching. I understand that all

students are different. I will be ready to encounter a spectrum of possibilities to ensure the

success of society's future.
