(Musical Instrument Crafts for kids)
Supplies Needed:
1.With an exacto knife, cut a thin long rectangle 1 inch wide and 7 inches long in the center of
each piece of cardboard.
2.Tape the two pieces of cardboard together to form a circle.
3.With a wire cutter, cut 6 pieces of wire, each piece 2 1/2 inches long.
4.With a nail and hammer, make a small hole in the center of each bottle cap.( I used a nail and
hammer but a drill would work well also)
5.Thread one wire through two bottle caps and two metal washers and then tape the top and
bottom of the wire to the inside of the tambourine so that the bottle caps/metal washer part fits in
the rectangular open space of the tambourine. Repeat with the remaining 5 wires, bottle caps and
washers.
6.Mix up a paper mache paste of the water and flour.Stir/whisk well to ensure no flour lumps.
7.Cut out strips of paper about 1 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches long. Dip in paper mache paste
and smooth off excess paste from strip. Cover entire cardboard tambourine(both inside and
outside) with paper mache strips. Let dry. (May take 1 to 2 days).
8.Once dry, paint the inside and outside of the tambourine with tempera or poster paint. Let dry.
Music plays an important role in every child's development. Beginning at birth, music stimulates
the brain and provides a platform for listening, language and creativity. Research shows that
children who play an instrument excel academically, including scoring higher on standardized
tests.
