Introduction
The Special Instruction outlines the installation of the fuel priming pump.

Advantages of the Fuel Priming Pump

The fuel priming pump reduces the time that is needed in order to prime the fuel system. The fuel priming
pump will help eliminate contamination of the fuel supply.

Installation of 206-5756 Fuel Priming Pump Gp

Use the parts in Table 1 to install the fuel priming pump.

The following procedure should be used in order to install the fuel priming pump on Caterpillar equipment.
Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel
working on the machine.

To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect

switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not
equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables
from the battery and tape the battery clamps.

Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to

inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can

cause a fire.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF when draining and/or removing any
fuel system components.

NOTICE

Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area
around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a
suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop

Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Determine an appropriate location in order to mount the pump. Refer to Illustration 1. A template is provided
for the mounting holes. The template is located at the end of this instruction. Use a 9 mm (0.354 inch) drill
bit for the mounting holes. Use the bolts, nuts, spacers and mounts that are provided to attach the filter base
to the machine.

The mounting location for the fuel priming pump will be determined by the application. Ensure that the fuel
priming pump is located in an area that can be serviced easily. Ensure that you have access to the 6V-8189
Nut when the 190-8970 Base As is attached to the machine. Ensure that the fuel priming pump is located
away from electrical components. Ensure that the fuel priming pump is located away from debris and all hot
surfaces.

The electrical circuit for the fuel priming pump must have an in-line 5 amp fuse. The electrical circuit for the
fuel priming pump must have a spring loaded activation switch. The spring loaded activation switch must
have a factory default setting to the OFF position. Route the wires for the fuel priming pump away from
rubbing or chafing surfaces. The activation switch should be mounted within reach of the ignition switch.
The activation switch should be disabled when the ignition switch is in the OFF position.

The diameter of the fuel hose will be determined by the application. The size of the fuel fittings will be
determined by the application. The fuel hose should be capable of a minimum rating of 2068.5 kPa (300 psi).
The fuel hose must be routed away from electrical components and away from hot surfaces. The fuel hose
must be routed away from rubbing and away from chafing surfaces.

Two inlet connections and two outlet connections are located on the base of the pump. Refer to Illustration 5
and Illustration 6. The arrows on the filter base indicate the direction of fuel flow through the pump. Use the
180-8071 Hex Socket Plug and the 136-7227 O-Ring Seal to plug the unused ports prior to activating the
pump.

Electrical Connection

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Refer to Illustration 2. Use 16 gauge wire to connect
the fuel priming pump to the electrical system. Route the wire in a manner that will avoid chafing and
scraping. If necessary, use rubber grommets.

Test for the Electric Priming Pump

After the electrical connections are completed, and the connections for the fuel line are completed, turn the
battery disconnect switch to the ON position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Hold the
activation switch for the priming pump in the ON position. The electric priming pump should run when the
switch is held in the ON position.
