TROUBLESHOOTING KONTAKT:
This library does NOT use the “add library” function in Kontakt and all files must be access
through the regular Kontakt browser (upper left side of Kontakt). Please use the file browser
in Kontakt and locate the program (.nki) files in the library to use it.
VIRAL AMBIENCES
Viral Ambiences contains a massive section of dark and cynical ambient soundscapes. The
tonal category contains more pitch-based ambiences - where as the two gritty banks contains
the source material of your worst nightmares. The perfect setting for any horror composer.
BACTERIAL HITS
The bacterial hits comes in two main groups (short and long), which each have three separate
banks of dark hits. The premise is the same as the viral ambiences - we are back in the
unpredictable darkness with little to no hope of survival. You will find anything from more
classical sound design hits (some really massive ones too btw) - to more experimental type of
hits. One of the great parts of this category is that it contains a great amount of stand out
sounds - that can really help create a super unique WTF moment in your score.
PARASITICAL RISERS
The risers comes in two banks, long and short. These are an assortment of risers - some in the
more common realm of trailers and motion picture realm - others deeply disturbing and
unpredictable.
CONTAGIOUS MICROWAVE
We sorta wondered what would happened if you bought a microwave and abused it till its
brink of death - we are talking rolls of tinfoil, quail eggs, regular eggs, popcorn without bags,
tons of CDs and old useless operating system DVDs. Everything was thrown into the
microwave and we captured it all.
The core concept of Free Radicals is to freely mix and manipulate all these sounds. Don’t get
stuck in one category or expect something predictable. The whole premise here is to explore
the concept of a free radical. You never - ever - know what is gonna happen next.
KEYSWITCHES AND EFFECTS
Free Radicals is
incredibly easy to
use, yet incredibly
flexible. You can
control a massive
subset of elements
directly from your
keyboard,
including tonal/
pitch control,
sample trigger
control and all the
effects that are
associated to the
samples. All
available right on
your keyboard.
MODWHEEL: The
beloved modwheel
controls a low-pass
filter. The default is
set to no filter, however the second you start adjusting your modwheel you will note the sound
becomes softer and more muffled based on the level of filter. This allows you to sculpt the sample
to the given “softness” level of your composition and makes the sample fit better in the mix. Works
super well with the bit-resolution on the pitchbender btw.
LOW-KEY RANGE: The low keyranges on your keyboard controls the tone/pitch of your sample,
which means you can control the pitch of any sample at any time. This allows you to have samples
follow the pitch of your composition or simple just create an entire new song out of the samples.
All samples are loaded in the root key of D.
MID-KEY RANGE: The mid keyranges on your keyboard controls the samples themselves. Each core
patch contains approx. 25-50 samples and all of them fit eachother, so you can easily stack 5-10
samples at the same time. Imagine having several instances loaded and start mixing them. The
possibilities are endless and you can create some incredibly cool tones by doing this.
HIGH-KEY RANGE: The high keyranges on your keyboard provides you real-time control of all the
effects, including LOFI, Rotator, Delay, Convolution Reverb (with +40 custom convolutions),
Reverb. You can trigger these effects at any time AND you can trigger them all at the same time.
Works super well in combination with pitchbender and modwheel controls.
FX AND CONTROLS
Free Radicals contains 5 different effects that can all be controlled directly from your keyboard.
Filter is controlled on your modwheel. Five of the effects are controlled in the upper part of your
keyboard. All the effects are marked with yellow keyswitches and the orb emits a yellow color
when then are triggered. You can trigger all of them at the same time if that is your thing. You can
sculpt insane sounds out by triggering these.
Filter (modwheel)
Modwheel controls a low-pass filter. The default is set to no filter, however the second you start
adjusting your modwheel the sound becomes softer and more muffled based on the level of filter.
Lofi
A grainy texture to your sound - similar to bit-resolution on the modwheel. But can really be gritty
combined with distortion.
Rotator
Delay
Delay allows you to sculpt more sophisticated rhythms out of the samples.
The convolution system always defaults to bypass mode when you first load an instrument. When
the convolution chain is bypassed/disabled by choosing "none" from the Impulse Response drop-
down menu, this knob is also disabled and only fully dry signal is audible, with no signal
attenuation. If you save an instrument while a convolution impulse is loaded, the instrument will
remember your settings and automatically reload the sample impulse next time you open the
instrument.
Dry Mix: This knob controls the dry signal returning from Kontakt's internal convolution engine.
Turning it up past ~36 increases the gain over the original signal level and therefore may increase
noise or cause distortion in some cases.
Wet Mix: This knob controls the 'wet' effected signal returning from Kontakt's internal convolution
engine. Turning it up without balancing it against the dry level can quickly increase the total
combined gain over the original signal level and therefore may increase noise or cause distortion
in some cases.
SCORING TIPS
Free Radicals is the darkest,
most cynical and disturbing
library we have ever come
across. The core concept was
not only to engage the
community, but also get
enough content to create a
really wild and wide
selection of dark sounds.
But the real “beauty” of this
library is its somewhat
unpredictable nature. This is
the result of over 100 people
submitting their sounds and
while that may sound chaotic
- there is a strange
consistency in the library
Free Radicals is about setting yourself free from conventions. Its not your standard library -
with standard articulations and standard scoring tools. This library is about exploring
darkness and taking it all the way to the edge of the abyss - maybe even jump into the
abyss too.
The core idea is to let yourself be inspired or scared of the sounds. The library is perfect for
anybody into dark/horror inspired scores - but it is also great for a composer that wants
absolutely unique sounds to stand out.
One of the cool things about Free Radicals is our internal real-time FX system. The upper
part of the keyboard controls all the live-FX (see page 6). You can completely change the
whole timbre and character of a sound - just by applying and adjusting some of the FX. The
most powerful of all is our convolution reverb, which contains a wide assortment of both
classical and less classical types of convolutions. Try to take a sound - play a bit with
modwheel (filter control) - then add some lofi or distortion and process it through one of
the more obscure type of convolutions. It may trigger some convolution convulsion or just
be exactly what you were looking for.
Free Radicals contains a great amount of ambiences and hits. You can create complete
grooves and alternative” drumkits” form the hits and essentially create otherworldly
textures and beats form the material.
But there is no right way of using this library. Its simple of matter of what is right to you ♥
