Timothy Tsipenyuk Truth’s Project

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” This was stated by Henry David

Thoreau which means that people see things more differently than other people based off their

views on the world. This is caused by the influence of manipulation and the fact that two people

argue drastically about violence but see it in two different perspectives. I agree with the quote

because people see things differently than others.

One reason that this quote is caused by the influence of manipulation is because

perception plays a very important role in the quote by Henry David Thoreau. To prove this a

good source to use is the story of Othello. Othello is a book written by shakespeare and explains

how manipulation can ruin a person’s life. As stated in Othello it states that “After a while I’ll

start telling Othello that Cassio is too intimate with Desdemona. Cassio is a smooth talker and a

good-looking guy, the sort of man that people would expect to be a seducer. The Moor is open

and straightforward. He thinks any man who seems honest is honest. People like that are easy to

manipulate. So it’s all decided. I’ve worked it out. With a little help from the devil, I’ll bring this

monstrous plan to success” (Shakespeare, Act 1,Scene 3,Page 16). This means that Iago is going

to manipulate othello by convincing him that desdemona is cheating on him with cassio when

she really is not. This proves that the influence of manipulation and perception play a very

important role in the quote written by Henry David Thoreau.

Another reason is that two people argue drastically about violence but see it in two different

perspectives. To prove this two men going by the name of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King

jr. Malcolm X was an activist for a civil right movement and Martin Luther King jr was the

leader for a nonviolent civil right movement also one reason why slavery ended. According to

malcolm x he states that “our people are within their rights to protect themselves by whatever
means necessary”(Malcolm X, page 32). This shows how Malcolm thinks violence is the key and

people have to protect themselves from others for whatever means necessary even if you have to

kill someone. But according to Martin Luther King jr he states that “Fewer people have been

killed in ten years of nonviolent demonstrations across the south (1955-1965) than were killed in

one night of rioting in watts”(MLK, page 32) This shows that he thinks nonviolent protest works

better than violent protest. This proves that violence is a form of manipulation and it plays a very

important role in the quote said by Henry David Thoreau.
