CHEE 3400 Fall 2017

Process Control Final Exam (50 Points)

1. Find the overall transfer function, H2(s)/Q(s) from the process relationship below; use deviation variables for your
answer (30 Points).

2. A part of an overall process is provided in the PFD (Figure 2). Within this process, Reactant A is fed to a reactor, R-
203, via level to flow cascade as Reactant A is produced from an upstream unit. Addition of Reactant B is controlled
via flow control loop; both reactants are combined immediately before the reactor inlet. The reaction is exothermic,
and thus, an outlet temperature control loop regulates the flow of cooling water through the reactor, counter-
currently. Find the control action for each of the controllers in the process flow diagram below (possible options are
DIRECT or REVERSE) (10 Points).

3. A parameter that is common to all DCS control points is the normal mode parameter. An operator can change the
mode of any control point at any time, but there is a mode for which the point as designed. Based on the process
and regulatory control design, all DCS control points will have a normal control mode in which each will operate at
steady-state operation. That is, when the process is operating smoothly and not dealing with an abnormal situation,
each point should be in its normal control mode. Specify the normal mode for each of the control points below
(possible options are Manual, Automatic, or Cascade) (10 Points).

4. BONUS: Specify a potential improvement on the control design for the process below (from Problem 2). Examples
of improvements can be adding more cascade options, feed forward options, and/or higher-level process monitoring
/ optimization functions. Any new DCS points should be clearly identified; explain your controls rationale, if
necessary (10 Points).
