My Mentor

students wishing to
 Document a minimum of 3 hours

What is Gastroschisis?
 Babies abdominal wall is weak allowing for the intestines
to grow outside the body
 Occurs when there is small opening in abdominal wall
 Spleen is sometimes seen outside the body along with
ovaries in girls
Project
 I chose this topic because I find it interesting how this
happens and also how it is treated.
Key Points
 Causes and Risk Factors

 Treatment

 Gastroschisis vs Omphalocele

 Development and Diagnosis

 How Gastroschisis affects the

baby
Causes
 Exact causes are still unknown
 Some people believe it happens due to
abnormal changes in chromosomes or
genes
 Exposure to environmental toxins or
medications Risk Factors
 Younger mothers
 White teens are more likely to give
birth to child with Gastroschisis than
African American teens
 Lower income families
Treatment

 Baby is intubated
 A silo is put around the intestines
 Everyday the silo squeezes the intestines a little
more in order to push them back into the
abdomen
 The operation takes place when the intestines are
squeezed enough to fit in abdomen
 Usually happens on day 3
 During operation the skin isn’t closed completely
Gastroschisis vs Omphalocele
Similarities
• Present themselves in similar
way
• Similar treatments
• Both are considered rare

Gastroschisis Omphalocele
Hole next to belly button Hole inside belly button
Intestines are not covered by a Intestines are covered by a protective
protective sac sac
Amniotic fluid can irritate the intestines Organs extend into the umbilical cord
due to no protective covering
Occurs more often, 2-6 out of every Occur in 2 out of every 10,000
10,000 newborns newborns
Development
 Develops early in pregnancy
 4th – 8th week
Diagnosis
 Can be seen as early as 14 weeks on an
ultrasound
 If the mother has elevated alpha- fetoprotein
(AFP) can also indicate Gastroschisis
 The mother will require more frequent
ultrasounds to monitor the fetus after
diagnosis
How Gastroschisis Affects the Baby
Short Term Long Term
 Relatively long hospital  Gastroschisis usually
stay doesn’t lead to future
 Baby will not be able to problems
eat food for a while  The malrotation can
cause short gut syndrome
 This can lead to future
problems

with Gastroschisis
 Poorly resourced countries don’t have the funds to pay for the
silo
 Students at Rice University created a bag that was cheaper
 The bag diameter can be adjusted so that one model is
applicable to all patients
 This bag is being used for limited trials in Uganda

Conclusion
 I learned a lot about the NICU this semester. I learned
many of the different reasons why babies need to be in
the NICU.
 This project helped me learn a lot about the different
factors that can cause Gastroschisis and also how it is
treated so that the baby will live a normal life in the
future.
I would like to thank…
Valerie for being my mentor and
teaching me throughout this semester
Mrs. Moss and Mrs. Herrera for taking
time and coming to my presentation
Mrs. Click for choosing me to be in this
class and giving me this opportunity
My Mom and Dad for helping through
this process
