Chapter I. Increased demand for Bamboo as Building Material.
A fast emerging market in the21st century---the market for
organically treated bamboo.

a. In the previous century, Bamboo was often referred to as

“poor mans’ wood”. Not anymore. Technology for Treatment
and preservation has lenghtened its service life. While untreated
bamboo may last only for 2 years.
Properly treated bamboo can last 15-30 years.

With this increased longevity, Bamboo has become a

a choice material for construction.
b. A Tool to mitigate the effects of global warming.--
Today, it is the scientists’ tool to mitigate or lessen the
building up of Carbon Dioxide (Co2) in the atmosphere.
(Some bamboo species grow up to 80 cm every night!)
This phenomenal growth rate has earned bamboo the
reputation, “ the fastest co2 sequestor in all of the plant
world”.

As of this writing, one can find in Bali (Indonesia),

the biggest bamboo structure in East Asia, “The
Heart of School Building” built by PT Bambu (www.
Greenschool,
2. A new Buyers’ mindset needs an equally new approach to
the manufacture and Treatment of Bamboo.

One important criteria that the foreign Buyer looks for

in choosing a factory/supplier is: Is the factory supporting
the Sustainability of Bamboo?
In the choosing of factory-suppliers, he is more prone to buy
from companies that practice “stewardship principles”.---
factories that support the continuance of the Earths natural
resources, and applying eco-friendly practices----including
the minimum use of toxic synthetic chemicals, or none at all.
(further reference, the internet, browse on “Neem”)
3. Treating Bamboo with plant based extracts and organic
protectants. “LongLife Bambu” (LLB).

Due to health and environmental concerns over the

use of synthetic pesticides, we are forced to look into the past
for an effective traditiona way of controlling pests.
“Neem” ( Indian word for “Mimbao” (Java), “Intaran” (Balinese),
was planted in Indonesia during the 12-19 century Majapahit
Empire. The plant, a cousin of Mahogany, is endemic to India
and Ceylon.
and when this plant based extracts are combined with
organic minerals, the effect is a very potent insect
inhibitor and wood fiber protector.

The active ingredients in LLB, Azedaractin from the Neem tree

(local name Intaran(Bali) or Mimbao (Java), and the organic
crystal salt, Borax (Disodium Tetraborate)---could satisfy the
Buyers’ demand for an”earth-friendly pesticide”.

Among the benefits, are as follows:

1, Azedarachtin works directly on the insect larvae.
by inhibiting its growth.(It stops eating, and practically
starves itself to death)
The larvae stays in the bamboo for 54 days, causing
more damage (eating the starch in the bamboo) than
the adult (mature) insect.

The adult D. minutus powder post beetle, makes

the exit hole,
( a job which require about 2 days)
When in contact with Azedarachtin, the adult cannot
reproduce (rendered impotent).
Borax (disodium tetraborate) is an effective block
mainly for termites. It wrecks the digestive tract
of the insect.

In normal dry condition, the 2 ingredients, Azedarachtin and Borax when

already inside the bamboo remain inside indefinitely.
Both are deemed “permanent”, as they do not
evaporate... providing a long lasting protection for the bamboo.

3. Technical description of the LLB Emulsion.

The formulation comes in an emulsion form, an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC)

The formulation (mix ratio) can be adjusted to fit the required soaking time.

It is a nanoemulsion, with the oil broken up into very small particles and
well balanced not to settle or float on the water surface. The balanced
condition is due to the addition of surfactants and spreaders

These surfactants are described as non-ionic linear alcohol ethoxylated based,

amine reacted tall fatty acids.

In laymans terms, the emulsion uses “food grade” type of spreaders. The reason
why, the formulation has been tested safely for cow and dog lice (Kuto)
page 03
3.a. Safety and Quality claims:

- Helps to nourish and condition the soil.

- environmentally safe. No harmful residue.

- Insects do not develop resistance.

- Acts as reproduction controller. The adults become impotent.

- Safe for human handling.

3.b. ODOUR
During the soaking/immersion process odour may develop.
This is due to the bacteria in the water releasing sulfur during
decomposition of the starch in the bamboo.

The odour should not be taken as a cause for concern as it

will go away when the material will dry. To minimise the odour,
a small percent of chlorine is added.

CHAPTER 2- Process Guide/ Standard Operating Procedures

The treatment and delivery methods used for injecting

the solids into the bamboo are as follows;

1. Treatment by immersion/ soaking

2. Treatment by Diffussion
A. Vertical Soak Diffusion
B. Horizontal Soak Diffusion

3. Treatment by injection/impregnation
A. using compressed air.
B. Injection by water pressure
(elevated tank)

All methods are effective up certain criteria of maximum

impregnation of active materials and the economics involved.

Some methods may require construction of dipping pools,

compressors, agitators and pumps.
