Group Counseling Model with Trait and Factor Approach to


Increase Maturity of Students’ Career Choices of public senior high school in
Padang City.

Abstract
This research was based on preliminary study of of public senior high
schoolstudents in Padang city, West Sumatera. The first finding in the field showed
there were many students who experience the maturity of their choices of career. It
could be seen that many of studentswere still confused todetermine theirinterest and
place to go after graduation. The aims of this studywereto produce a group counseling
model with trait and factor approach to improve the maturity of the career choices of
high school students to be valid, practice, and effective. The research designused
research and development with quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the
quantitative data which werebased on problems in the field will betested with validity
test; effectiveness; and practicality. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were gathered by
observation, interview and Focus Group Discusion.This research had resulted
counseling group model with trait and factor approach toward the improvement of
students’ maturity of career choices.
The group counseling model with trait and factor approach was developed
through problem solving method by using dynamicgroup counseling. The product trial
subjects involved 16 students which consistedof 8 students of experimental group and 8
students of control group to determine the students by performing pretest-postest
through maturity tests of their career choices. Collecting data techniques were in the
form of tests, interviews, observation and scale. Data analysis technique were processed
with SPSS version 17.00. The research product wasa book of group counseling model
with trait and factor approach toward the maturity improvement of career choice of high
school students, counseling guidebook for trait and factor group for the school
counselor.
The research result showed that the group counseling model with the trait and
factor approach could improve the maturity of the career choices of public senior high
school students in order to produce the quality of group counseling documents with the
trait and factor approach in the form of works or products through ideas, new ideas by
using dynamic group on students who experience the maturity of the direction of his
career choice, with material was a model book that was tested for its validity,
practicality and effectiveness. In the end, this model could be a prototype and standard
group counseling with a trait and factor approach to improve the maturity of students'
career choices.
