TUTORIAL 4

DERIVATIVES
(RATE OF CHANGE and RELATED RATES)

1. If a ball is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 24.5 m/s, then its height after
t seconds is 𝑠 = 24.5𝑡 − 4.9𝑡 2
a) What is maximum height reached by the ball ?
b) What is the velocity of the ball when it is 29.4 m above the ground on its way up?
On its way down?

2. If a tank holds 5000 liters of water, which drains from the bottom of the tank in 40
minutes, then Torcelli’s Law gives the volume V of the water remaining in the tank
after t minutes as
𝑡 2
𝑉 = 5000 (1 − ) , 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 40
40
Find the rate at which water is draining from the tank after (a) 5 min , (b) 10 min , (c)
20 min, and (d) 40min. At what time is the water flowing out the fastest? The
slowest?

Answer: 1) 30.625m, 4.9 m/s, -4.9 m/s 2) −218.75 𝑔𝑎𝑙 ⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛 , −187.50 𝑔𝑎𝑙 ⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛, −125 𝑔𝑎𝑙 ⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛,

3. A man starts walking north at 1.2 m/s from a point P. Five minutes later a woman start
walking south at 1.6 m/s from a point 200 m due east of P. At what rate are the people
moving apart 15 min after the woman start walking? [ 2.79 𝑚⁄𝑠] ,

4. If two resistors with resistances 𝑅1 and 𝑅2 are connected in parallel, as in the figure,
then the total resistance 𝑅 , measured in ohms (𝛺) is given by
1 1 1
=𝑅 +𝑅
𝑅 1 2
If 𝑅1 and 𝑅2 are increasing at rates of 0.3 Ω⁄𝑠 and 0.2 Ω⁄𝑠 respectively, how fast is 𝑅
changing when 𝑅1 = 80 Ω and 𝑅2 = 100 Ω [0.132 Ω⁄𝑠]

5. A 13 ft ladder is leaning against a house when its base starts to slide away. By the time
the base is 12 ft from the house, the base is moving at the rate of 5 ft/sec.
a) How fast is the top of the ladder sliding down the wall? [-12 ft/s]
b) At what rate is the area of the triangle formed by the ladder, wall and ground
changing? [-59.5 ft/s]
c) At what rate is the angle θ between the ladder and the ground changing? [-1 rad/s]

6. A girl flies a kite at a height of 300 ft, the wind carrying the kite from her a rate of 25
ft/s. How fast must she let out the string when the kite is 500 m away from her? [20
ft/s]

7. At noon, ship A is 100 km west of ship B. Ship A is sailing south at 35 km/hr and ship B
is sailing north at 25 km/hr. How fast is the distance between the ships changing at
4.00 pm? [55.4 km/hr]

8. A runner sprints around a circular track of radius 100 m at a constant speed of 7 m/s.
The runner’s friend is standing at a distance of 200 m from the center of the track.
How fast is the distance between the friends changing when the distance between them
is 200m? [6.78 m/s]

9. Sand falls from a conveyor belt at the rate of 10 𝑚 3 ⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛 onto the top of a conical pile.
The height of the pile is always 3/8 of the base diameter. How fast is the radius
changing when the pile is 4 m high? [15⁄32 𝜋 𝑚⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛]

10. A cube is expanding so that its volume is increasing at a constant rate of 12.3 𝑐𝑚3 /𝑠.
How fast is the surface area changing at the instant when the volume is 27 𝑐𝑚3 ?
