PLAN OF INVESTIGATION

In order to complete my English Language School-Based Assessment, I decided to focus on the

topic “Coaching in Athletics”, which came from my group broad topic Athletics. I chose this

topic because it is in my best interest to find out how coaches balance the training programs for

each individual athlete being coached, seeing that I was once an athlete who was curious of this

and also should I make the decision to venture on this path in the future, then I would be

sufficiently informed beforehand through this project. To complete my portfolio, I will need to

research and make sensible logical notes from the various information that I've collected.

Information will be collected from softcopy sources and summarized based on coaching in

athletics.

I will have to critically review my work and analyze my text to ensure that the data is within my

scope and that my conclusions are sensible. However, through active cooperation and

participation from group members, I am sure that this assessment will no doubt aid in the

development and understanding of the various techniques and strategies utilized in this

communicative art form. In summary, this research is intended to provide me with insight

regarding athletes, coaches and our own perceptions of both parties.

3
Reflection #1

As I began my research on “Coaching in athletics” I stumbled upon various articles and a

Poem. They all helped to widen my knowledge base about the tasks coaches have to deal with on

a daily basis. Additionally, as an individual, what I garnered and understand from my research is

that coaches are not merely trainers, but rather they comprehensively play the roles of parents,

counsellors, motivators, and even the role of critics. Athletes have the tendency to complain

about how hard training is and the amount of time that needs to be dedicated to it and so to break

the negative mindsets of these athletes, coaches indirectly have to take on these roles to offer

encouragement and motivation for wherever or from whomever it is lacking. Also, as it relates to

the education of coaches, it was revealed that they tend to study at various levels, depending on

group of athletes, their purpose and level of representation. It can therefore be concluded that an

athlete cannot perform at their best or on the highest level with a coach that is not willing to take

them as one of their own child.

4
Reflection #2

My three pieces of data for my portfolio all include effective language that the writers used to

effectively achieve various purposes. In data source #1, the writer in the expository piece used

different types of devices to inform the audience, for example he used repetition throughout the

piece, explicitly stating “You’re the coach” on different occasions and further explains the

conventional duties of a coach as well as the unconventional roles that a good coach may adopt.

However, in the other articles the writer used various expository techniques such as evidence of

research and also quoted statistical information in an effort to improve the credibility of the

articles.

5
Reflection #3

I must admit that this English S.B.A has contributed to an increase in my knowledge base

about athletic coaches and what really happens behind the scene. I have significantly improved

my skills in grammar and also enlarged my vocabulary through conducting this research. Also,

having to work together as a team with individuals of different personalities, helped me to build

some of my non-cognitive skills such as teamwork and cooperation, and time management.

Overall, I learnt a lot from this assessment, and am thankful for every moment, both good and

bad that led to the completion of this task. Tolerance and patience, we two weak areas of mine

that were challenged as it regarded the collection of information and input from different

individuals. The experience was definitely a worthwhile one.

6
Written Report

Our group was built based on the passion we all had for “Athletics”. So, we then created our

topics and branched off with reasonable research questions pertaining to our focus. The strategy

we used was “Divide and Conquer” where each group member was busily engaged in finding

research question as well as “Choose the best” where we choose the three best articles to include

in the report finally, after reading through the data sources, identified the type of writing and

purpose we settled for an expository article, a news report and a poem. Our research question

entails:

1. What are the academic impacts on students involved in athletics?

2. What are the benefits of sports to society?

For our three pieces of data source the entire group explored on the two main questions

mentioned above. Our group put every piece of information together that was suggested. It helps

us to differentiate and acknowledge the similarities and differences among the pieces of data.

In studying the data sources we realized that athletes face unique challenges, getting out of

their comfort zone and the time restraints imposed by their sport. One of the hallmarks of

athletes the aspired to be great is the desire to improve in every given task.

Also, they are faced with major challenges for example, high school athletes having to get in the

art of balancing academics, athletes and their social roles and responsibilities in the midst of

resolving the transitional experiences. All incoming students or new students are also faced with

social adjustments as well as loneliness which may somewhat cause them to stress.

7
Sports are apart human society. They can be perceived as battle, in some cases, performed

weekly for the masses to see. There is no doubt that these athletes and the sports they represent

have become important to the spectators that enjoy watching them. While it may sound like

sports are something that is easily written off, something that doesn’t matter to everyone, theses

displays actually have a positive impact on the society. They help to form bonds across socio-

economic groups as well as help to promote a more active lifestyle for those who may not be

overly active to begin with sports is one of the few things that transcends socio-economic status

and brings people together. It encourages people to get lead active lifestyle exercise. By

encourage people activity it helps build a healthier society while it may seem

#1: A Poem
The Coach
You're the counselor.
When certain players can't accept defeat.
You're a minister.
Teaching them about humility.
You're the coach.
A title that takes on many roles.
You're a defense attorney.
When parents get enraged.
Thinking their child's better.
Then they really are.
You're the coach.
It takes a dedicated soul to give them.
When many parents love to criticize.
And refuse to assist.
It takes a calm manner person to accept this job.
Because many parents are releasing to you their child.
To motivate them to be better.
Not just at the game.
But, as a person with kindness.
Long after the game.
When many will forever think winning is everything.
Until they lose to see the sportsmanship.
Is how you handle things.
You're the coach.
In the mist of many fools wearing that title.
Because some treat their players like they entitled.
You're not afraid to bench the star of the team.
Even, if many think you're being mean.
You're the coach.
Who's respect for your dignity?
If anything states about you.
That you would like.

10
You want them to state you were fair.
Even amongst the dislikes.

Glen Mills: The Coach Behind Usain Bolt and other Jamaican Champions

Glen Mills is the head coach at Racers Track Club in Kingston, and while he does not have one
athletics’ medal, his coaching abilities have made a significant mark on track and field sports.
His Racer’s Track Club tutees have won a total of 71 medals at the IAAF World Championships
and another 33 medals at Olympic competitions. Nineteen of these medals were won by Usain
Bolt, the fastest man in history, and one who praises his coach with enthusiasm every chance he
gets. He performed odd jobs at the track and ultimately became mentor and instructor to a
younger group of athletes. Mills has been coaching for 42 years and has a deep reserve of
experience that he uses to nurture many of the best athletes in history. Mills has worked to
understand anatomy, agility, coordination, and biochemical analysis, in addition to identifying
talent. He has honed his craft through associations with the IOC, IAAF, and other prestigious
organizations. After a disappointing performance at the Athens Olympics, Usain Bolt turned to
Mills to help him fulfill his promise as an athlete. Mills recognized Bolt’s natural talents, but also
noted his poor technique, which he went about remedying over a two-year period devoted to
breaking Bolt’s bad habits. Mills takes a technical approach to coaching, focusing on details and
intricacies in race photographs, and balancing the psychological elements of each athlete. He
integrates motivational work with daily routines in order to create well-rounded people rather
than just “speed machines.” Central to Mill’s approach is the idea that athletes “must lose in
order to learn to win.” His athletes have faith in him because of the strong physical and
psychological grounding he provides.

Coaching Education
The coaching education program provides educational opportunities for all levels of coaches,
from grassroots to the elite level. The program is comprised of three progressional levels, each of
which has the following components:

 Sport Science
Extensive instruction in sports science is covered in order to provide a scientific basis for
understanding for the rational development of technique and training programs. The
sports science portion has been developed by the American Coaching Effectiveness
Program (ACEP) and the USATF National Coaching Education Committee. It includes
sports psychology, pedagogy, and sports medicine.
 Technical, Event-Specific Instruction
Throws, jumps, sprints/hurdles, and endurance events are all covered at the basic level in
this school. Event-specific instruction is progressive in nature. Consequently, at Levels 2
and 3, each event is covered in greater depth and detail than the previous level.
 Hands-on Training
Experience is the best teacher. Minimum standards of practical experience are expected
of participants at each level.
