Pollution
Pollution is defined as the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance

or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects. Air pollution has become one of the most difficult

issues not only the United States, but in the world. People everywhere are doing as much as they

can to decrease the amount of unwanted toxins in the air and increase the amount of healthy

oxygen to breathe.

Agren, Christer. “Editorial: Protect People and Nature from Air Pollution.” Editorial: Protect

People and Nature from Air Pollution, 3 Oct. 2014, www.airclim.org/acidnews/editorial-

protect-people-and-nature-air-pollution.

Author, Christer Agren, gives input by expressing his opinions and found facts on air

pollution. His main topic in this editorial focuses in on how to protect people and nature from the

harmful air pollution. Although air pollutants in Europe have gone down significantly in the past

years because of the less polluting cars and power plants, it is still being over-run by the number

of industrial usages such as more cars on the streets because of high population increase,

factories, and much more. The air we breathe has become cleaner, but it is still unhealthy to the

point where it is considered deadly to some extent. Agren points out how some people can argue

that this is just a “natural phenomenon” but the facts he backed himself up with can prove them

wrong. These health impacts carry enormous costs to society. In just the year 2010, although

being almost a decade ago, the amount that damage that was done to health was between 330 and

940 billion dollars. This requires a significant “step-up” in what needs to be done to save the
Vaughn 2

planet since the health benefits alone outweigh by far the additional costs for emissions control.

By saying this, the point that can get across is that there are health issues that eventually lead to

economic issues causing a whole chaotic jumble. After saying the facts about how it

economically affects people as well, he leads into talking about the extents they are willing to

take to control the air pollution issue.

Argen explains finally on how the EU and the government are currently taking

precautionary measure to decrease the amount of toxins that we breathe into our body. The small

particles we breathe are only making our life sentence shorter, and the thing is, there is nothing

we can do about it because we can’t see the tiny toxins. Also, not only does it affect us, it also

affects biodiversity and nature which helps release oxygen into our atmosphere and builds up the

ozone layer. It is also required for a “higher quality of life” for people here on Earth. For the

pasts decade, scientists and air quality index workers have been slowly coming to solutions such

as, “minimizing the use of fossil fuels.” Argen says how this “is key to resolving both climate

change and air pollution,” because it cuts severe emissions such as fine particular matters unseen

to the naked eye. Maintaining these chemicals can make the air safer by a long far and it might

not be noticeable to the naked eye, but it will help the body in the long run by a ton. Reducing

car usage and meat consumption is also detrimental to help. Pollution can be solved with these

methods and Argen uses thorough detail to explain how it can be done regardless of everyone

else’s opinions.

Ansari, Azadeh. “Air Pollution Deaths on the Rise, Study Predicts.” CNN, Cable News Network,

16 Sept. 2015, www.cnn.com/2015/09/16/health/air-pollution-deaths-rising/index.html.

In CNN’s article written on Sept. 16, 2015, Azadeh Ansari talks about the causes, effects,

and precautions revolving around air pollution. The main topic of this scientific article is to
Vaughn 3

explain into detail about how more than six million people could die each year from severe air

pollution around the world. It has one of the most major impacts on deaths worldwide, ranging

from babies that aren’t even born yet, to people in the retiring age. The study suggests that the air

we breathe outside can be more harming than people could ever imagine. He begins right off the

bat by applying ethos. He states a fact given from the World Resources Institute that says how

burning fossil fuels for electricity is the leading cause and main driver of climate change. Ansari

begins with that cause, so he can lead up to the effects such as explaining how exposure to air

pollution particles contributes to the risk of developing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

He applies a comparison of HIV and malaria to emphasize how deadly this actually turns out to

be by saying how AIDS and Malaria deaths are 2.8 million, but the number of deaths from air

pollution in the environment is half a million more. Ansari, so far, has talked about the causes

and effects that air pollution has on our environment and people in the world.

The next two things that Ansari talks about in his study are air pollution deaths in

different areas and the country-specific changes to affect health. The first highlight he goes over

is how it affects different regions. The study examined outdoor emission sources in urban and

rural environments. The contributors to this issue are residential and commercial use, agriculture,

power generation, industry, biomass, burning, natural causes, and land traffic. Facts were found

and elaborated on when he says how agricultural emissions were the leading cause of premature

air pollution deaths in countries such as the Eastern United States and Europe followed by traffic

and power generation emissions. The study found Ammonia released from fertilizers mixes with

other sources of air pollution can have a big impact on air quality, researchers found. The study

concluded that some areas of the world have more pollutants in the air than others. Larger cities

have a much higher level than rural areas with more plants and trees to release oxygen into the
Vaughn 4

air and less cars, factories and much more industrial items to pollute the air. Testing the air for

the amount of toxins can be much more difficult than it seems because of the developing

countries lack of funding which results them to take extreme measures to find out the levels

there. Changes that are going to be made begin to be talked about when Ansari states how Air

pollution solutions have to be on a country-by-country basis since their levels of it in the air are

different. In the United States and Europe, it could be most beneficial to take measures to lessen

the impact of agricultural emissions. In Asia, researchers said, implementing better control over

small burning sources and upgrades to new technology would go a long way. They announce to

take small precautions every day to minimize the amount of harmful gas in the air. Pollution has

become a major problem in the world today, and it is important to talk about all the causes,

severe effects, and changes that have to be done to stop it.
