How to write an effective paragraph?
A paragraph
·Concerned only with one main idea
·Contains a Topic Sentence

·Elaborate "ts" with examples, explanations,

statistics to support
·Use a concluding sentence to sum

up and link up the next paragraph.


Topic Sentence (ts)

Controls the idea of the paragraph (compared to
TS to the essay)
l
It SHOULD NOT be the same as the title or TS
l
Rather, each ts should be the idea branched out
from TS

ts should be like TS
In the way that it is:

Specific

Related to but not restating TS

In COMPLETE sentence

Sentence ONE: true but BORING
Sentence TWO: identify the TOPIC + CONTROLLING
IDEA
Sentence THREE: is it restating the title in different
words?
Sentence FOUR: TOPIC + CONTROLLING IDEA
present?
Sentence FIVE: I know, but how complicated?
Task Ten

Then...
(1) Firstly, you need to decide how much...

(2) Secondly, you may examine the models...

(3) Thirdly, you are suggested to shop around...

Note the connectives which separate ideas

They are useful, and also a complete bore.
