Objective : 1. To study the effect of water flow rate and inlet gas composition on the efficiency of CO2
gas absorption.

Abstract : Gas absorption is a process in which the soluble parts of mixture are transferred to a
liquid. Gas absorption is done in a packed column .This report are done as to examine the
air pressure drop across the column as a function of air flow rate for different water flow
rates through the column. When the air pressure drop to certain limit, the phenomena
known as ‘flooding’ will occur in which the system can no longer operate as it is. Hence, the
‘flooding point’ is to be determined as to make sure that the process should be made
to operate under the ‘flooding point’. The packed column is used in industry to produce mass
transfer, i.e. gas absorption, distillation, and liquid extraction while the packed bed represents a
workhorse configuration for a wide variety of mass transfer operations in the chemical process
industry. The flow will be counter-current: gas will move upwards and liquid will move downwards.

1) Firstly, we need to convert the unit of 3L/min to dm3.

3L/min x 60 min = 180 L = 180 dm3

* Know that,
1000mL = 1000cm3
1000 cm3 = 1dm3

2) The concentration of CO2 gas of sample time at 0 min is:-

1 mole of any gas has a volume of 24 dm3

mol = 180 dm3/24 dm3 = 7.5 mol

M = 7.5 mol/ 1.7mL = 4.41mol/mL

3) The concentration of CO2 gas of sample time at 5 min:-

C = 7.5 mol/ 2.8 mL = 2.68 mol/mL

4) The molarity for each sample time calculated by using this formula
mol CO2 , mol
Molarity,M = 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑, 𝑚𝐿

1) Firstly, we need to convert the unit 3L/min to dm3.

6L/min x 60 min = 360 L = 360 dm3

* Know that,
1mL = 1cm3
1 dm3 = 1000 cm3

2) The concentration of CO2 gas of sample time at 0 min:-

1 mole of any gas has a volume of 24 dm3

mol = 360 dm3/24 dm3 = 15 mol

C = 15 mol/0.4 mL = 37.5 mol/mL

3) The Concentration of CO2 gas of sample time at 5 min:-

C = 15 mol/1.6 mL = 7.5 mol/mL

4) The molarity for each sample time calculated by using this formula
mol CO2 , mol

Sample Time (min)

From the graph of the flow rate 3L/min above, we can conclude that the CO2 gas being
absorbed is decrease slowly and increase at the sample time at 5min to 10min and
decrease at sample time 10min to 15min. Lastly, the sample remain constant at time
15min until at 20min. This error happened because there was already CO2 gas in the
absorption and the packed column was not fully dried. Therefore, the efficiency of CO2
gas being absorbed is slightly efficient.

From the graph of the flow rate 6L/min above, we can summarize that the CO2 gas being
absorbed is decrease as the time increases and remain constant started at the sample time
at 10min until 20min.
