• Girders will be continuous for
live load only.
• Eliminate expansion joint
leakage problem.
• Increase the bridge bending
capacity.
• Diaphragm reinforcing steel can
go through cored holes in the
girder webs.

Make Steel Girders Continuous Over Piers
• Before deck pour, weld the bottom flanges.
Concrete diaphragm on top of the pier
bent (either monolithic or structurally
separated).

• Structure will be simply supported for

dead loads, and continuous for
superimposed dead loads and live loads.
