Chapter 3
Seventh Chords
You've studied triad inversions both up and down the strings and across the stringsets. This also can
apply to seventh chord inversion; however, itis not as easy to see as itis with triad shapes. We'll just look
at seventh chord inversions in a vertical way and learn the shapes first. By this we mean vertical musical
movement, allhough physically its more of a horizontal one on the guitar. The musical change in pitch is
why we rele fo movement along the same strings as up (toward the body) or down the Iretboard (toward
the headstock),
‘The combination wel start with isthe voicing 1~5-7-3, a chord in root position. f each note is moved
up fo the next higher chord tone (and 7 moves up to 1), then we get the first inversion: 3-7-1-5
Repeating the process, we get the voicin
19 5-1-3-7 for the second inversion, and finally 7-3-5~1 for the
third-inversion voicing,
Memorize and practice the voicin
'g for each of the seventh chord types. Sing the bass note! Practice
all four shapes on all possible roots,
