RESEARCH PROCESS FOR BASIC AND APPLIED BUSINESS

RESEARCH

As a social being we mostly want to know the newest information

or news. In order to investigate them, we shall do a research. In Business

Study, research mostly done to solve a problem existing in a company in

order to improve the company quality According to Oxford dictionary,

research is “careful study and investigation, especially in order to discover

new facts or information”. In doing a research, we have to implement

some steps or processes, there are nine steps of the research process.

The first step is Observation. We can observe or identify the broad

problem area through observing and focusing on certain situation. Broad

problem area itself is entire situation where issues or problems are possible

to be solved. The broad problem area would be narrowed down to specific

issues for investigation after some preliminary data are gathered by the

researcher. This may be done through interviews and literature research.

The second step is Preliminary Data Collection. In preliminary data

collection we can collect secondary or primary data. Secondary data is

data that is already available in existing sources such as website, archives,

and data record. Primary data is the data that should be directly collected

by the researcher through an interview or field observation, or

questionnaire. In this step, we can collect data about background

information of the organization; managerial philosophy, company policies,

2
other structural aspects; and perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral

responses of organizational members and client systems.

The third step is Problem Definition. After doing the interview and

literature survey we can define the problem needed to be solved. Problem

definition is issue that is to be investigated with the goal of finding an

answer or solution. The problem definition can be regarding about existing

business problems where a manager is looking for a solution.

The fourth step is Theoretical Framework. After conducting the

interviews, conducting a literature survey, and defining the problem, we

are ready to develop a theoretical framework. A theoretical framework is a

conceptual model of how we theorize or make logical sense of the

relationship among the several important factors. The theoretical

framework discusses the interrelationships among the investigated

variables. There are four types of variables: dependent variable,

independent variable, moderating variable, intervening variable.

Therefore, the theoretical framework is the foundation on which the entire

research project is based.

The fifth step is Generation of Hypotheses. From the theoretical

framework, then, testable hypotheses can be developed to examine

whether the theory formulated is valid or not. A hypothesis can be defined

as a logically conjectured relationship between two or more variables

expressed in the form of a testable statement.

The sixth step is Scientific Design or Scientific Research Design. A

research design is the set of methods and procedures used in collecting and

analyzing measures of the variables specified in the research problem. The

3
scientific research design defines the purpose of the study, the types of

investigation, extent of research influence, the study setting, unit of

analysis and time horizon.

The seventh step consists of Data Collection, Analysis and

Interpretation. Data collection is a process of collecting information from

all the relevant sources to find answers to the research problem, test the

hypotheses and evaluate the outcomes. After the data being collected then

the collected data is analyzed according to theory and method chosen.

After the data being analyzed, the analyzed data is interpreted.

The eighth step is the process of Deduction. In this step we

confirmed the previous hypothesis with the research result interpretation.

Therefore, we confirm whether the hypothesis is suitable with the

outcomes or not. If the hypothesis substantiated or accepted then the

research question is answered.

The last steps consist of Research Report, report presentation, and

managerial decision making. Because the research is conducted in regards

of managerial problem, the result of the research should be communicated

and presented to the manager and other parties. The research report is

written academically, therefore, it can enable the manager to consider the

argumentation and recommendation for their company. By this, the

manager and other parties within the company can implement the

recommendation or problem solving given by the researcher.

Overall, the steps of research method for business are simply the

process of finding solutions to a problem after thoroughly study and

analyze the situational factor. They focus on solving problems and pursue

4
a step-by-step logical, organized, rigorous method to identify problems,

gather data, analyze them and draw valid conclusions. Thus, as a

researcher we just need to: identify where exactly the problem lies;

recognize the relevant factor in the situation needing investigation; know

what type of information to be gathered; know how to make use of

collected information and draw appropriate conclusions to make the right

decision; know how to implement the result of this process to solve the

problem.
