The guest speaker, Mustafa Ayhan, was graduated from Uludağ University.

Afterwards, he
started to work in Bosch in 1998 and concurrently completed MBA program at Yeditepe
University. So far, the field of IT systems, networks, production of IT systems, process
management, project management, carrying out him responsibilities. He is the director of “IT
Operation’s” units of the 17 countries in the Middle East and Africa including Turkey. The main
topics of this speech were Smart Life and Industry 4.0. Also, he mentioned about technological
developments and its process.
The first part of speech was about Bosch. We were informed that the company has around
400-500 thousand employees and 120 locations all over the world. He gave some structural
informations about Bosch. Then, he mentioned about Mega Trends in fast changing world.
These are mobility, urbanization, connected World, resources and demography. He gave us
some examples about how these trends change year by year. Moreover, he shared their
developments about Smart Life at Bosch. Some of them are energy storage solutions, connecting
parking spots, intermodal transportation, connected buildings etc. For example,we can find park
spot more faster thanks to Bosch Community-Based Parking. We can design cities more
effectively in terms of transportation, clean air and infrastructure by using these technologies.
The important part of the speech was about “Internet of Things” which is also related to
Smart Life but I’ll mention it in separate paragraph. So, The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system
of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people
that are provided with unique identifiersand the ability to transfer data over a network without
requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. A thing, in the Internet of
Things, can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm animal with a biochip transponder,
an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the driver when tire pressure is low or any other
natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and provided with the ability to
transfer data over a network.of one their goals about IoT is integrated manufacturing 4.0 with
Iot. That process has 3 steps which are Enablement, Digitize existing ecosystems and new cross
domain ecosystems respectively. He also explained these steps in the process. These applying
process about Iot with manufacturing is important because we can be more productive at
production systems by using this technology. At this stage, we need no longer human power in
most system’s process because of using robots, but we still need humans for cognitive ability.

Kevin Ashton, cofounder and executive director of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, first mentioned
the Internet of Things in a presentation he made to Procter & Gamble in 1999. Here’s how
Ashton explains the potential of the Internet of Things: “Today computers -- and, therefore, the
internet -- are almost wholly dependent on human beings for information. Nearly all of the
roughly 50 petabytes (a petabyte is 1,024 terabytes) of data available on the internet were first
captured and created by human beings by typing, pressing a record button, taking a digital
picture or scanning a bar code. The problem is, people have limited time, attention and accuracy
-- all of which means they are not very good at capturing data about things in the real world. If
we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things -- using data they
gathered without any help from us -- we would be able to track and count everything and greatly
reduce waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or
recalling and whether they were fresh or past their best.”
There are some challenges about applying Industry 4.0 which are availability of skilled stuff,
integration of disparate data, cross-deparment cooperation and keeping the IoT secure. It is a
well-known fact that cyber crime has incerasing day by day due to the increase in digitalization
systems. This situation is a serious threat for the Iot sytems.Cybercrime costs 450 billion dolars
per year all around the world.
It was an insipiring talk about what the world going to be transformed into in the future.
Having a specific view of the application areas of Industry 4.0 and IOT and having an idea
about what kind of tasks the industry engineers can take in this process is an important
information that can guide us through our career paths. We also learned about the vision and
targets Bosch aims to achieve in the future.
