About NSD: On 28 February 1928, Dr C.

V Raman had announced the discovery of the


celebrated Raman's Effect for which he was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics.
February 28 was designated as National Science Day by Government of India in 1987. Since
then, this day is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm. The activities include
debates, quiz competitions, exhibitions, lectures, etc., involving college and school students and
teachers. Research institutions/laboratories have been organizing a House Day/Week a NSD is
also aims at creating awareness about the contribution of Indian scientists (including engineers)
and Institutions to the general public. Inculcation of scientific temper and capacity building of
science communicators is also a vital component of NSD celebration.
The theme selected for this year is "Science in the Nation Building" Demonstration of science
experiments to school students, screening of science film, students' visit to science museum
and a popular science talk are the major programmes held as part of the NSD
