Arts and Social
Sciences
At the School of Arts and Social Sciences, we pride ourselves on our use of
theories drawn from disciplines such as journalism, gender studies, sociology,
history, literature and film studies, anthropology, political science and international
studies, to understand the current social and political issues. From theorising
these issues, we then challenge our students to confront them through ethical,
responsible, critical and informed thinking. Our approach is unique because of
our commitment to interdisciplinary methods of teaching.
Whatever the topic, the School looks to engage students in principled debates on
the social and political landscape of these issues. Students can pursue a degree
in Arts (Social Sciences), Arts (Global) and Communication. The highlights of the
School include local and regional study trips, internship and career opportunities.

research skills to a range of disciplines.”
“The Sunway campus also provides a multicultural environment that embraces cultural diversity, with students
from all over the world, and this has certainly made an international student like me feel welcomed and
appreciated.
“I have gained new experiences, stories and expanded my networks of friends from other parts of the world here
and it is an enriching and insightful moment of my student life,” she said.
Being a School of Arts and Social Sciences student, Catharine also had the privilege to participate in the
School’s annual trip which brought her and 18 other students to Bangkok and Buriram in Thailand in June 2012.
“During the trip, we learnt about the complex and ever-changing social, cultural and political landscape of the

Low Wei Yan
Bachelor of Arts, 2011
Great company and amazing lecturers were the ones
who helped Wei Yan through his good and bad times,
as well as developing him as a person during his time
in Monash.
In terms of researching and conceptualising programs,
Weiyan believes that the programs organised by
lecturers and societies were the ones that truly helped
him at the end of the day, because ‘education’ alone
was not good enough to measure one’s creative
capacity.
“Most of my advanced film knowledge and skills were
acquired during the Filmmaker on Campus program
coordinated by Monash University Sunway campus’
Filmmaker in Residence, Mr Fikri Jermadi.”
He is currently working as a Production Assistant at
No Quarter TV, a documentary production team and
believes that the Schoo l of Arts has exposed him
to more theoretical understandings of the world and
society today.

Devangi Perera
Currently pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics
Describing it as “the best decision she ever made”, Devangi is very glad that she
had chosen Monash University Sunway campus to pursue her tertiary studies.
Wanting to acquire the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the
corporate and commercial world, the Sri Lankan first came to study the Bachelor
of Business and Commerce at the School of Business after receiving the
Entrance Scholarship from the Sunway campus.
“At the Sunway campus, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from very
different culture. In addition to teaching excellence, the campus also provides
students the opportunity to be part of a wide variety of clubs and societies, and
various on- and off-campus events.
“This has helped me to maintain a good balance between studies and extra-
curricular activities, having participated in numerous cultural shows, club
activities, and other university events.
By maintaining good academic results, Devangi has managed to secure 100%
scholarships to pursue the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Business and
Commerce and PhD in Economics all at the Sunway campus.
“I believe both the Honours degree of Bachelor of Business and Commerce and
PhD in Economics has helped me develop research expertise which would give
me a competitive edge in the job market,” she said.

Chia Sheng Yeong
Completed Bachelor of Business and Commerce, 2012
Sheng Yeong is a bright student and initially secured a place to pursue Medicine, prior to his enrolment in the
School of Business. However, after giving it a shot he came clean to his parents about his ultimate passion
which was business and economics. It was a challenging decision but he believes he made the right choice and
has not looked back since.
He first developed his interest in business and economics at the age of 14 when he pick up more complex
reading materials like Think and Grow Rich, instead of comics. “My curiosity about the effects of our daily
decisions on business and economics grew,” he says.
He moved on to win the Maybank-MoneyTree Young Entrepreneur Start-up Challenge in 2009 and also became
the National Champion, as well as one of the Top 8 International Finalist for the L’Oreal Brandstorm 2011

Engineering
At Monash University, we open your eyes to a world outside the classroom.
The Monash Bachelor of Engineering is well-known in the industry for its
integration of practical, hands-on training with theoretical learning. For students
who are unsure of the engineering field to pursue, we have developed a common
first year which allows students to choose an engineering specialisation in the
second year. This gives students time to decide the major out of the four that
the school offers – Chemical, Electrical and computer systems, Mechanical and
Mechatronics.
As a Monash graduate, you will walk away with more than a piece of paper, we
offer enrichment activities and programs designed to equip you for the workforce.
Monash University Sunway campus undertakes innovative research addressing
national and international priorities. As an undergraduate engineering student,
you will have the opportunity to participate in such research.
Sunway campus students must undergo their training in an industrial-based
environment after their third year of studies as required by EAC, Board of
Engineers Malaysia. The duration of the training is 12 weeks, upon which
students must submit a written report detailing the work experience.

Haikal Pribadi
Completed Bachelor of Computer Science, 2012
Haikal hails from Indonesia and grew up as an immigrant in Australia. Among his most treasured childhood
memories were having a room filled with books and encyclopaedias in his own small library. Even before he
owned a personal computer, Haikal had decided to pursue Computer Science, a field based on his interest
and strong skills in Mathematics.
During his first year of study at the University, he managed to maintain a higher than average GPA even though
he had to work two jobs to support his family through a terrible financial crisis. His hard work paid off when he
won the 2011 Monash University High Achiever Award and the Monash University Dean’s Achievement Award,
the subsequent year. He has also been awarded the School of IT Best Student Award for Bachelor of Computer
Science 2012 and the Wong Swee Soon Memorial Award – Best Graduate 2012.
Currently, during non-school hours, Haikal works as a research assistant in the School of Information
Technology developing a robotic benchmark environment on which agent controllers can be tested.
“I am grateful for the opportunity of being a research assistant at the School as it gives me invaluable
knowledge and experience,” he says.

important traits that employers are seeking for in fresh graduates
these days.”
He believes that a diverse student population at the Sunway
campus has also allowed him to learn the value of teamwork with
members from different cultural background.
“Given the difficulty levels of the assignments and the training
I got to cope with pressure and deadlines, the whole Monash
experience has prepared me well for the working world,” said

Dr Sukanya Banerjee Nair

Completed Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), 2012
Dr Sukanya has again made the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences proud when she
became the second Malaysian that received the coveted Sophie Davis Memorial Prize in 2012. Dr Shaun Yo
Wee Shuan from the School had also won the same award in 2011. Dr Sukanya, a JPA scholar, outperformed
450 other medical students from three Monash campuses – Monash University in Malaysia, and Clayton
and Gippsland in Australia. The Sophie Davis Memorial Prize is given to the student with the highest overall
aggregate marks for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program.
“I was sitting there at the dinner table with my classmates. We were on a road trip to Langkawi. When I saw
the email telling me I had won the prize, I could not believe it! No one thinks something like that could happen
to them,” Dr Sukanya said.
“I was in shock for a few days.”
Dr Sukanya admitted that she had not come out top in any year of study, but believes that her consistency
had paid off.
“It’s pretty amazing!” said the 24-year-old. “And for the School to get it two years in a row, says a lot about
the School.”
She singled out Deputy Head of School Prof Dato’ Dr Khalid Kadir as an inspiration to work hard, and
credited her tutors at the Sunway Campus, the School’s Clinical School Johor Bahru, and Hospital Sultanah
Aminah for their steadfast support. Her classmates, too, she added, were instrumental in her learning.
“My classmate Vishnu Prashad Bhakthaval Salan and I studied together, and we were learning off each
other. It’s great that our batch produced eight first-class honours graduates. Everyone did so well.”
