1 - Standards Proposal Sheet

-Student Name:
Isaiah Brindamour
-Standard (write it out):
Read closely to determine what the text says and to make logical inferences from it cite
specific text evidence when writing or speaking to support your conclusions.

-List the artifacts you would like me to consider in grading this standard. (Keep in mind,
poor choice of artifacts could count against you, so it’s not really about the number of
artifacts as much as the quality of the artifacts you’ve chosen.):
NWP vs NAWSA Essay

-Explain in detail why you think you’ve met this standard (I suggest a separate
paragraph for each artifact you are using):
My essay shows I can closely analyze text, make logical inferences from it, and
cite text evidence to support reasoning. In this essay I was presented with different
evidences such as graphs, datas, and texts and charged with the task of answering a
question of the difference of two groups using a claim and argument. I was able to use
the evidences given to further prove my argument by carefully analyzing their data and
citing it into the argument. Finding this data required careful examination of text
evidence and visuals. To read closely and find evidence from the data I looked at all
parts of the graph and related them to one another. Without knowing what the entirety of
the data means the evidence one may have found from it is useless. So by looking at all
aspects; the visuals, the titles, the labels, the measurements, etc, I can find the data
and what it really means and then use it in my argument. To make inferences from this
data involved finding relations between what was being argued and what the data
showed. These relations not always being straightforward and simple but normally
requiring cross checking of data points and relevant evidence of a group. To make
these inferences requires knowledge not always thought about like the dates of certain
things or who it was made by. This is exactly the type of things I looked at to make
logical inferences to prove my claim. Finding specific pieces of data and relating them to
what your trying to prove then identifying the relation is how I found and constructed my
inferences. So after finding these significant data points I simply just introduced them
into the arguments relating to the point the data is most relevant towards. This would
mean just showing the reader the relations I have already seen then presenting the
inference so that they can find the inference themselves than be confirmed that the
inference is true. Now onto how I specifically implanted my evidence into my argument
using in text citations. As the evidence I was supplied had very little textual matter to it a
basic in text citation was not possible and required me to improvise. So to improvise
such a thing turning visual evidence into text form had to be done to be able to be
citable. What this means is that I analyzed the visual data and transcribed it into text
that could be easily explained to the reader and then after was able to provide an in text
citation referring to which evidence document the data was from. Creating the evidence
citation was different from a regular citation however. Normally the evidence had no
author and only sometimes an actual name to reference this required me to label the
evidences myself and use that label to present the in text citation. This proved to be the
only way to complete the in text citation while having it remain in text and being able to
present the name of the source with the citation.
