ABOUT LIVEUPDATE
**********************************************************************
LiveUpdate is the Symantec technology that permits an installed
Symantec product to connect to a Symantec server over the Internet to
check for program and other updates such as virus definitions and URL
lists.
When updates are available, LiveUpdate downloads them to your computer
and installs them, keeping your Symantec software up to date. All
updates that are downloaded with this version of LiveUpdate are
checked for a valid digital signature.
Certain types of content may require a subscription. LiveUpdate
will only download subscription content if a valid subscription is
found on your machine.

**********************************************************************
PROXY SERVERS
**********************************************************************
Most Internet users don't need to configure their computers to use a
proxy server, however some ISPs and companies require you to connect
to the Internet through a proxy server. You can configure LiveUpdate
to use a Proxy via the LiveUpdate Control Panel applet.
Note: If you do not know what a proxy server is, it may be best to
change these options only when instructed to do so by a network
administrator.
You can set up LiveUpdate to use HTTP or FTP Proxy servers by
selecting the appropriate tab in the Control Panel, and then choosing
the second radio button to customize the settings.
By default, LiveUpdate will use the same proxy server settings that
you have set up for use with Internet Explorer.
Note: LiveUpdate uses HTTP for file transfers by default, however it
will fail over to FTP if it is unable to communicate via HTTP.
If your proxy server requires authorization for outside access, you
can also enter a user name and password for HTTP proxy servers.
If you have any difficulty configuring your proxy settings, contact
your network administrator for assistance. Each network is different,
so only they can help you with this step.
Important security consideration:
---------------------------------
When provided with usernames and passwords, LiveUpdate will store
this information in its settings file in encrypted form. However,
when this information is sent to a proxy server, it is sent in an
encoded, but unencrypted form. It is sometimes possible to capture
data packets on the Internet, or on your LAN, and therefore it's
possible that your password data may be viewed by others during
transmission to the proxy server. If you have any concerns, please
contact your network administrator.
**********************************************************************
VERSION & DIGITAL SIGNATURE INFORMATION
**********************************************************************
There are two ways to determine the version of LiveUpdate that
you have installed.
1. Open Windows Explorer and locate the file luall.exe. This file is
usually located in the LiveUpdate client installation folder
(\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate). Right-click on LUAll.exe, and
then select Properties. Click the Version tab to see the File version
information.
2. Run LiveUpdate, click on Options in the top left-hand
corner of the LiveUpdate dialog, and then select
"About LiveUpdate". The full product version is listed.
You may also right-click on any of the LiveUpdate executable files
(*.exe, *.dll) in the LiveUpdate folder and select the "Digital
Signatures" tab to view the Symantec Digital Signature on the files.
**********************************************************************
RUNNING LIVEUPDATE
**********************************************************************
There are several ways to run LiveUpdate.
1. Through your Symantec product. Most Symantec products which use
LiveUpdate offer a LiveUpdate button.
2. Run LiveUpdate from the folder created under
the Start menu by your Symantec product(s).
3. Open a command prompt and run LUAll.exe, or create a
shortcut to this program on your desktop
(\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUAll.exe).
Note: Some product updates may only be retrieved by selecting the
LiveUpdate option from within that product (option 1).
**********************************************************************
UPDATING LIVEUPDATE
**********************************************************************
LiveUpdate occasionally needs to be updated. LiveUpdate will
automatically check to see if there are any available updates to
itself each time it is run. It should update itself transparently
(without any extra input), but in certain rare cases, it may require
that you run LiveUpdate one additional time to complete your session
after it has finished its update. If this is required, LiveUpdate
will prompt you.
Updates to LiveUpdate are also posted to the URL below:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
**********************************************************************
INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING LIVEUPDATE
**********************************************************************
All Symantec products that use LiveUpdate include it as part of the
product installation.
If you encounter a problem with LiveUpdate that you or Technical
Support believe to be the result of an installation problem, or
Corrupted files, you can reinstall LiveUpdate.
To reinstall LiveUpdate
1. Locate LUSETUP.EXE or LUSETUP-LT.EXE on your computer or on the
CD-ROM containing your Symantec product.
You may also download the latest version from the Internet at:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
2. Double-click LUSETUP.EXE or LUSETUP-LT.EXE
You will be prompted if you wish to install LiveUpdate.
3. Click Yes.
The LiveUpdate program will automatically reinstall.
If you wish to uninstall LiveUpdate, note that you will no
longer be able to receive updates to your Symantec products.
To uninstall LiveUpdate:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select LiveUpdate from the list, and then click Add/Remove.
**********************************************************************
LIVEUPDATE CONFIGURATION & LOG FILES
**********************************************************************
LiveUpdate stores all of its configuration and logging information in
the following files:
log.liveupdate - Log file
product.inventory.liveupdate - List of installed Symantec products
settings.liveupdate - Configuration settings
If LiveUpdate cannot find its configuration files, it will recreate
default versions of the files. In this event, LiveUpdate will
also create a file called configuration.log.liveupdate.
LiveUpdate will keep backup copies of the product and settings files
by adding a number to the beginning of the filename. The higher the
number, the older the file.
These files are normally located in the Application Data folder on
your computer. The location of this folder is Operating System
dependent:
Windows 98/98SE/Me
\windows\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
Windows NT/2K/XP/2003
\Documents & Settings\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
or
\Windows\profiles\all users\application data\Symantec\liveupdate
Some other Windows XP systems
\Documents & Settings\all users.windows\application
data\Symantec\liveupdate
If you cannot find this folder, search for one of the filenames noted
above.
Note: You should not edit any of the files noted above unless directed
to do so by Symantec Technical Support.
**********************************************************************
USING AOL (America Online)
**********************************************************************
Symantec has documentation in the Symantec online knowledgebase that
can assist you in using LiveUpdate with America Online. Please go to
the following URL to review this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/19982515512
An important consideration in configuring LiveUpdate to work with AOL
is to first make sure you are using a recent version of the AOL
software.
Note: Symantec is not liable for any phone charges incurred when
making this dial up connection. Don't forget to close your Internet
connection when you have completed your LiveUpdate session.
**********************************************************************
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
**********************************************************************
LiveUpdate uses three possible methods, or transports, for retrieving
updates and installing them.
1. HTTP
HTTP is the primary method used to download files from the Internet.
The primary Symantec update servers are accessed using the following
domains:
http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com
http://liveupdate.symantec.com
2. FTP
If LiveUpdate is unable to connect using HTTP, it will automatically
attempt to use the older FTP method. You may need to configure
LiveUpdate to use an FTP proxy for FTP to work correctly. Our FTP
servers are accessed using the following domain:
ftp://update.symantec.com
3. LAN (Local Area Network)
Corporate customers may wish to create their own internal LiveUpdate
servers to ease bandwidth usage. More information about the LAN
transport is available from within the LiveUpdate Administration
Utility.
NOTE: If LiveUpdate finds the LAN transport file (s32luhl1.dll) in the
same directory that it is being run from, it will search for a LAN
entry in its settings file and use that transport instead on the FTP
and HTTP transports.
**********************************************************************
KNOWN ISSUES
**********************************************************************
1. Password Security: Please see the Proxy Servers section above for
more details on known issues with transmission of password
information.
2. The Automatic LiveUpdate component may be configured to
check for virus definition updates in the background. Normally,
LiveUpdate will only do this when it detects an open Internet
connection. However, some devices, dialup routers for example, can be
configured to create an Internet connection when they detect this
activity. Users should note that this could result in unexpected
connection charges. In addition, automatic LiveUpdate may behave
differently with different versions of the AOL connection software.
We recommend that you review the "USING AOL" section above.
NOTE: ISDN on-demand Internet access and Automatic LiveUpdate.
ISDN charges are generally higher than standard analog phone line
charges, so users of these systems are asked to pay particular
attention to this issue.
3. Some "Ad Blocking" software products may deny LiveUpdate access to
the file servers from which it downloads updates. If you are using
this type of software you should disable it if you notice problems
when downloading LiveUpdate packages. Once you have completed a
LiveUpdate session, you can re-enable the "Ad Blocking" software.
Alternatively, you can try to configure your software to allow access
to the LiveUpdate servers listed in the Technical Information section.
4. If you use defragmentation software and you use the Automatic
LiveUpdate feature, you should note that this may cause the
defragmentation software to restart every time Automatic LiveUpdate
checks for an Internet connection (usually every 5 minutes). If you
notice this behavior while defragmenting your hard drive, it is
suggested that you pause the task scheduler until defragmentation has
completed.
5. Some 'Zip' utilities may intercept the updates that are being
downloaded by LiveUpdate and cause problems while LiveUpdate is
trying to uncompress these files.
You can work around these problems by temporarily turning off this
feature of your Zip utility when you are running LiveUpdate. For more
information, visit the Symantec support website at
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/
6. Some combinations of Windows NT 4.0 running on Intel Pentium 4
processors cause LiveUpdate to display a LU6003 error. To resolve
this issue you should install/re-install NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 or
higher.
7. On some Windows NT/2K systems, the LiveUpdate control panel icon
may not work properly. This may be because the LiveUpdate installer
was unable to upgrade the old control panel functions. To resolve this
problem, try restarting your computer and deleting the file
S32LUCP1.DLL from the \windows\system32 folder.
Note that the operating system will lock this file if you try to open
the control panel before deleting the file. Restarting the computer
will unlock the file. When the S32LUCP1.DLL file is removed, the new
control panel functions will be available.
8. On 64bit Itanium systems there will be no LiveUpdate Control Panel
applet. To access this functionality, run "luall -control"
from the Start/Run Windows menu. In addition, you may also select the
"Show x86 control panel" option from within the control panel on 64bit
Windows systems.
9. Some Symantec product update patches may update the version number
of the product it is updating. As a result, when targeting custom
content updates for these products, precautions should be taken to
account for this. Custom content which is targeted for a registered
product of one particular version will no longer be retrieved by
LiveUpdate if the version number changes.
10. Some of the help text within the ISP tab in the LiveUpdate control
panel may be truncated due to a bug in Microsoft's HTML help. If this
occurs, please try applying all the critical and recommended updates
which are made available through Microsoft's Windows Update web site.
11. You cannot use the "-temphost" command-line feature to point
LiveUpdate at a CD-ROM device. This is due to filename length
limitations with the CDFS file system.
12. When using custom content, it is not recommended that you use the
LUAdmin download folder to host custom content. LUA can be configured
to remove unused content, and this will result in the custom content
file being deleted. You may avoid this issue by not using the
"Cleanup Download Directory" option.
13. With Location Profiles, it is now possible to configure LiveUpdate
to access different servers for content. LiveUpdate records the names
of the files it has downloaded, and it will not try to download the
same file again if it does not have a more recent date and time stamp.
As a result, if you have a file sharing the same name on two different
servers, LiveUpdate will only download the newer file.
14. If you are using a proxy server to access the Internet, and you
use the automatic LiveUpdate feature (available in retail products
only), then you must use the LiveUpdate custom proxy settings option
to configure LiveUpdate to use your proxy server. Automatic LiveUpdate
will not use the same proxy server settings that have been setup for
use with Internet Explorer (via Internet Options).
15. An issue exists on some Windows machines where automatic
LiveUpdate is unable to run. If you notice that your virus definitions
and other automatic LiveUpdate compatible content is not being updated
you should open the Windows task scheduler and check the last return
code on the "Symantec Netdetect" task. A return code of "0x80" may
indicate a problem with the task scheduler on your machine. A fix is
available from Microsoft to overcome this issue. Please see the
following URL:
**********************************************************************
RECENT FIXES & UPDATES
**********************************************************************
2.5.55.0 -
Initial release of LU 2.5
2.5.56.0 -
Two issues were addressed in this release.
1. Fixed an issue where we were using the wrong icon on some dialogs.
2. Fixed a problem when Windows LiveUpdate was being used with
LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA). In some situations some updates were
not being downloaded if the machine that LUA was running on did not
meet the download critera for the updates. LU will now no longer do
this evaluation when being run from LUA.
2.6.x -
Initial release of LU 2.6.
