Identification Methods
Lucas’s Test
O.C + 1 mL HCl + 1 mL ZnCl2+ Shake
vigorously, then allow the mixture to stand.
2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine Test
O.C + 2 mL of 95% ethanol + 3 mL of 2,4-
dinitrophenylhydrazine reagent + Shake
If no precipitate appears within 5 minutes, heat
the solution in a hot water bath for 5 minutes and
then allow it to cool to room temperature.
Benedict’s Test
O.C + 2 mL of water +2 mL of Fehling’s soln. +
Heat the mixture to boil.
(copper(II) sulfate, sodium citrate, and sodium
carbonate)
Fehling's Test
O.C + 2 mL of water +2 mL of Fehling’s reagent+
Heat the mixture to boil.
Tollen’s (silver mirror) Test
O.C + 1 mL Tollen’s reagent+ Gently heat
Hinsberg’s Test
50 mg O.C + 0.2 g of benzene sulfonyl chloride +
4 mL of 10% aqueous NaOH + Shakevigorously
Ferric chloride Test
O.C soln. + 1% FeCl3 soln.+ Shake
Molisch’s Test
O.C + 2 mL of water + 2-3 drops of beta-
naphthol soln. + Very gently add 1ml of Conc.
H2SO4along the side of the test tube.
