Material Compatibility Guide

The following guide allows selection of materials for mechanical seals. However, be advised that several factors
influence corrosion mechanisms which are outside the scope of this document. Some of those factors include, but are
not limited to:

• Surface finish of metals

• Material condition (heat treat temperature, casting, forging, etc.)
• Manufacturing effects (welding, machining, coating)
• Fluid turbulence or stagnation
• Products of chemical reactions
• Radiation
• Cyclic loads (stress corrosion cracking)
• Presence or absence of oxygen
• Temperature
• Phase (solid, liquid, gas)

Some comments that relate to the use of this guide:

1. All chemical concentrations are assumed to be 100% unless otherwise stated.

2. Entries are listed in alphabetic order. Many of the prefixes used in organic chemistry are disregarded in
alphabetizing, since they are not considered an integral part of the name. These include ortho- (o), meta- (m),
para- (p), alpha- (α), beta- (β), gamma- (γ), sec-, tert-, sym-, as-, uns-, cis-, trans-, endo-, exo-, d-, l-, dl-, n-, N-
, O-, as well as all numerals denoting structure. However, there are certain prefixes that are an integral part of
the name (iso-, di-, tri-, tetra-, cyclo-, bis-, neo-, pseudo-), and in these cases the name appears in its normal
1
alphabetical position.

3. Chemical resistance ratings are limited to the following categories with the following explanations:
a. “A” = Recommended. The material is specifically recommended by a reliable source or sources,
exhibits a proven history within one of our heritage companies, or has the highest published
compatibility rating among all sources researched.
b. “B” = Use with Caution. Reliable sources are in conflict regarding use of the material in the service,
but sources that manufacture the material either recommend its use or give the material its highest
rating. An O-ring should not be used as a dynamic gasket if it carries a “B” rating. Typically more
research is required in order to apply materials with “B” ratings.
c. “X” = Not Recommended. Several reliable sources give the material their lowest rating or
specifically recommend against its use. Some materials have been assigned this rating due to direct
Flowserve experience with their use.
d. No Rating = no reliable compatibility information is available.

4. Temperature limits of elastomers are based upon their use as a dynamic gasket, and may be more
conservative than the manufacturers’ published ratings.

5. The Phase indicates the state of the material at 68°F [20°C] and 14.7 psia [1.01 bara]:
a. Cr = solid or crystalline (must be dissolved or suspended in solution)
b. Li = liquid
c. G = gas

6. Compounds which contain the note “EPA HAP” in the comments section are listed as Hazardous Air Pollutants
in the US 1990 Clean Air Act, 42 USC 7412(b)(1).

7. Personal Exposure Limits (PEL’s) included herein are those determined by the US Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA), defined in terms of Total Weight Average (TWA). Units are parts-per-million
(ppm) unless otherwise stated.
a. PEL: an employee's average airborne exposure in any 8-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week which
shall not be exceeded. 29 CFR 1910.1000.
b. Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL): a 15-minute TWA concentration that may not be exceeded.
c. Ceiling (CE): a limit which may not be exceeded for any duration.
The exposure limits included in this guide are for reference only and are not comprehensive. For complete
limits, see www.osha.gov/dsg/topics/pel/ and www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/nengapdxc.html.

8. Hazard Codes were assigned using the International Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) categories
assigned to each chemical in the IOSH database. Many chemicals carry risks not categorized formally by
IOSH, and those risks are noted in the Comments column where applicable. They were originally defined in
Annex 2 of European Council Directive 67/548/EEC:

Substances which, if they are inhaled or taken internally or if

Toxic (T) and very toxic (T+)
they penetrate the skin, may involve serious, acute or
substances
chronic health risks and even death.
Flammable: liquids having a flash point between 70 and
131°F [21 and 55°C].
Very Flammable: substances which may become hot and
finally catch fire in contact with air at ambient temperature
without any application of energy, or
- solid substances and preparations which may readily catch
Flammable (F) and very flammable
fire after brief contact with a source of ignition and which
(F+) substances
continue to burn or to be consumed after removal of the
source of ignition, or
- liquids having a flash point below 70°F [21°C], or
- gases which are flammable in air at normal pressure, or
- substances which, in contact with water or damp air, evolve
highly flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
Irritating: non-corrosive substances which, through
immediate, prolonged or repeated contact with the skin or
Irritating (Xi) and harmful (Xn) mucous membrane, can cause inflammation.
substances Harmful: substances which, if they are inhaled or taken
internally or if they penetrate the skin, may involve limited
health risks.
Substances which may explode under the effect of flame or
Explosive (E) substances which are more sensitive to shocks or friction than
dinitrobenzene C6H4(NO2)2-C6H4N2O4.
Substances which give rise to highly exothermic reactions
Oxidizing (O) substances when in contact with other substances, particularly
flammable substances.
Substances which may destroy living tissues upon contact.
Corrosive (C) substances

May cause long-term adverse effects in the environment.

Environmentally dangerous (N)
