INTRODUCTION
When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who
God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community
within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul’s words today. When
we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate
parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God
the same relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and
a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An
usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all
cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM
Blessed be the Holy Trinity: Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, the
fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our
salvation. Amen.
The presiding minister addresses the assembly.
Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy
and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.
Water may be poured into the font as the congregation gives thanks.
We give you thanks, O God,
for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your
Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took
delight.
Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family.
Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom.
At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy
Spirit.
By water and your Word you claim us as your own children, making
us heirs of your promise and servants of all.
We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life,
and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ.
Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness,
grace, and love.
To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the

SECOND READING: Romans 8:12-17
In describing the new life of faith, Paul refers to all three persons of the
Trinity: the Spirit leads us to recognize that we are children of God the
Father and sisters and brothers with Christ the Son.

Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to
the flesh—13for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the
Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who
are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a
spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of
adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing
witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then
heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with
him so that we may also be glorified with him.

As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, “May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.”

Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus’ miracles prompt Nicodemus to visit him in secrecy. Jesus tells him
about being born of the Spirit and about the Son who has been sent by God
to save.

came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a
teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do

grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be

As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct person as God
and Lord, OFFERTORY HYMN: Create in Me a Clean Heart (ELW 186)
so catholic religion forbids us to say that there are three gods or lords.
The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten;
the Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the
Father;
the Spirit was neither made nor created, but is proceeding from the Father
and the Son.
Thus there is one Father, not three fathers;
one Son, not three sons;
one Holy Spirit, not three spirits.

Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lord’s body
and blood, each time the words “Do this for the remembrance of me,” are
spoken.
Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting
and your faithfulness endures from age to age.
Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth.
Praise to you for saving the earth from the waters of the flood.
Praise to you for bringing the Israelites safely through the sea.
Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness to the land of
milk and honey.

O God, our life, our strength, our food, we give you thanks for sustaining
us with the body and blood of your Son. By your Holy Spirit, enliven us to

Lord.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace

Calvin embraced the Reformation, and as a preacher in Geneva,
Switzerland, brought a theocratic government to it. He is regarded as the
father of the Reformed churches.
Jiri Tranovsky, hymnwriter, died 1637
Tuesday, May 29, 2018
Tranovsky is considered to be the father of Slovak hymnody as well as an
important reformer of the Slavic church. He translated the Augsburg
Confession (the basis of Lutheran teachings) and published a collection of
Slovak hymns.
Visit of Mary to Elizabeth

This festival marks the occasion when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited
her cousin Elizabeth who was herself pregnant with John. Elizabeth
pronounced Mary "blessed among women," and Mary responded with the
song called the Magnificat.
Justin, martyr at Rome, died around 165
Friday, June 1, 2018
Born of pagan parents, Justin was influenced by an elderly Christian in
Ephesus. He became a teacher of philosophy and the Christian faith. Jailed
for practicing an unauthorized religion, he refused to renounce his faith and
was beheaded.
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2018
Altar Flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby and
there is attached to it a tear-off sheet for donors to complete and hand into
the office or place in the offering plate for proper publication in the
bulletin.
If you would like to purchase flowers for worship in memory of or in honor
