Pastor’s Corner
This Sunday is a Sunday so special, one hardly knows where to begin! We are pleased to be able
to welcome eight new members to our church congregation this Sunday. They have been through
seven and a half hours of preparation in a new members class, learning about the faith, our
beliefs, the structure of our church, and the many opportunities they have to serve. They have
studied the book, I Am a Church Member, asked excellent questions, and had the opportunity to
meet many of our church leaders. They are ready to become members of our church, and I know
you will do all you can to welcome them and make them feel at home. Each individual or couple has been assigned a
“Fellowship Friend” to help continue to orient them to our church. Please see their photos above and make sure to
greet them today.
We have a baptism of a little girl, Charlotte Quinn Parrish at our combined service this Sunday. She is pictured below.
You can be forgiven if you never read another word of this article but instead just keep staring at her adorable face!
Her parents, Ken and Amanda, were themselves new members not long ago, and we are glad to welcome this little
one into our fellowship on Sunday.
You will definitely want to hear our guest preacher on Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Barry Steiner Ball. Barry’s wife, Sandra,
was elected as a United Methodist bishop in 2012 and was assigned to the West Virginia Area. Barry has had an
interesting and varied career, not only as a pastor but also as a DEA agent. He will bring much expertise and
perspective to our Facing the Crisis in Hope drug workshop on Saturday, May 19 (there’s still time to come, even
without registering, if you get this before the event; see back page for info.). Barry is an
amazing storyteller and preacher, and his Pentecost sermon is not to be missed.
Following our combined worship service (remember: one worship service on May 20 at
10:00 a.m.!), we will head back to Fellowship Hall for some delicious tacos at our Taco Talk.
We’ll get started at around 11:30 a.m., and I promise we will stick to our time schedule and
have you on your way home no later than 1:30 p.m. As you did for the What’s the Scoop?
event in March, you have submitted excellent questions for your leaders to answer, and we’ll
provide some additional information as well. Even if you’re not a big taco lover, we’ll make
sure you get something good to eat; the main thing is that we want to make sure everyone is
included in the discussion.
Happy Pentecost, and I’ll see you on Sunday! Blessings, Pastor Jim Todd

OUTRAGEOUS...
As a church family, we are seeking to extend outrageous
hospitality to all who enter our doors, for all reasons! Many
folks who are not familiar with our church find themselves
here when the funeral of a friend or loved one is held at
ESUMC. Would you be willing to occasionally serve as an
usher/greeter/welcoming presence when funerals are held
at ESUMC? Responsibilities would include welcoming people,
handing out bulletins, asking them to sign the guest register,
giving them guidance and direction as needed. Please
contact Kathy Hinkey, 570-426-1623, 570-236-8183, or
k_hinkey@hotmail.com.
