Instructions:
Use the diagram below and the scenario that follows to answer Questions 1 and 2.

1. Your house is situated on Lot A. Over the course of a few months, you notice subtle changes
to the landscape. These changes include your trees begin to tilt. Also, your fencing poles
have leant substantially from what you remembered or can see in photographs. Small
furrows begin to develop on the hillside as well. Naturally, your parents are curious as to
what is happening. Explain to them:
a. The type of mass movement you suspect is occurring.
b. The evidence you have to prove your theory.
c. The causes of this phenomenon.
d. The steps that can be taken to reverse the issue and prevent further damage.
2. Your next-door neighbour who owns Lot B has decided to cut down all the trees on his
property in order to convert it to a commercial agricultural farm. He intends to cultivate
short crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and carrots. He also plans to construct a
small storage shed for his tools. Explain to him:
a. The type of mass movement can happen if he proceeds with his plans as is.
b. Why this is likely to happen.
c. In what way can this affect his life, his neighbours and by extension the
community/country.
d. The procedures he can take to construct some object to help or to change his plans
in such a way to minimize the effects.
