Year 10 Design Technologies Mini Unit

Task:
Your local council has asked you to design a product that makes re-use of pallets that they
receive their stock on. You are invited to create a solution to a product that will be in high
demand and with minimal effect to the environment. You must research the material,
sustainable practices and popularity of items to create choosing a target market to create a
solution to the problem. You will need to consider production and create a plan. Your final
design will need to be drawn to scale using 3D computer software.

Challenge: Create a product using a recycled pallet. Each student will receive one pallet each
to work with or combine to create a group project.

Collaboration Space:
Learning Place: EdStudio will be our collaboration, learning sequence, learning videos hub.
Here you will post blogs, update progress, add links, find links, videos that will assist in
solving the problem to your solution. EdStudio will be set up by the teacher prior to the
commencement of the unit and students will be active participants throughout the unit
contributing.

Knowledge and Understanding Processes and Production Skills
- Critically analyse factors, including - Develop, modify and communicate
social, ethical and sustainability design ideas by applying design
considerations, that impact on thinking, creativity, innovation and
designed solutions for global enterprise skills of increasing
preferred futures and the complex sophistication (ACTDEP049 - Scootle )
design and production processes - Evaluate design ideas, processes and

- Investigate and make judgments on criteria for success recognising the
how the characteristics and need for sustainability (ACTDEP051 -
properties of materials, systems, Scootle )
components, tools and equipment - Develop project plans using digital
can be combined to create designed technologies to plan and manage

Learning Outcome (4) Timber and Drilling Technique Authentic Learning

1. Safety of using machinery and PPE- teaching to model
and explain
2. Model cutting technique using drop saw to cut lengths-
students to practice using scrap
3. Model safely using different types of drills and drilling
techniques. Teacher to pre-drill, measuring and
determining where to place screws on lengths or timbers
4. Model safety and sanding techniques. There are many
different types of sanding machinery such as orbital or
belt sander. Sand paper may only need to be used if a
rustic effect.
5. Hinges- Depending on what students are creating,
different types of hinges will need to be explored.
Determine student briefs and adjust teaching to be
learner based.
6. Allow students to use all machinery and practice skills.
Learning Outcome (5) Production Authentic Learning
1. Explain safe use of workshop manner- safety of tools Sustainability Practices
and equipment, protective clothing that must be worn Creative thinking
2. Dismantle recycled pallet
3. Timber Cuts- explain safe use of materials as practiced
in previous outcome
4. Complete production plan and create solution to
problem.
Learning Outcome (6) Production- Special Effects Authentic Learning
1. Complete design brief by adding paint, varnish, special Creative Learning
touches to product for target market.
2. Sand off any loose timbers.
3. Product completion

and materials used.
3. Showcase work to class and communicate using Reflective Questioning:
presentation of processes. What issues did you have in
production of your product?
How would you improve your
production plan to be more
suitable?
What part of the production was
the most difficult?
