Construction project concept is not new, It dates back to the times when caveman started building his

dwelling. But modern project management differs from the past practices.

Construction Management is the discipline/process of Planning, Organizing, Securing And Managing


Resources to deliver specific objectives. A project is a temporary endeavour, having a defined beginning
and end undertaken to meet specific objectives and benefits, as defined in a business case.

Aim objectives and of construction management:-

AIM : a)Optimum utilisation of human, b)material, c)finance and time resources for Economical, d)safe
and timely completion of construction project.

e) Planning and scheduling:- Every construction work involves large number of activities, some of these
can be performed independent of others where as most of the activities are sequential in nature , i.e. an
activity can only be undertaken if an earlier activity or activities have been completed.

Example : Casting of RCC slab can only be taken if shuttering and reinforcement placing activities have
been completed.

f) Organizing:- After doing the planning and scheduling for the items of work , next requirement is to
create an organization for execution of the plan. Organization structure will depend on types of work
and time schedule.

g)Organization starts with:- i. Identification of different groups required for execution, procurement ,
etc. ii. administrative set up of all the groups iii. Organization of the teams within each group including
subordinate staff in each team iv. Lay down the duties and responsibilities of each staff member v. The
chain of command and delegation of the authorities.

h)Staffing:- The next logical step is to recruit the personnel with requisite qualification and experience to
carry out the duties allotted to them. Organizing orientation, training, and the periodic assessment of
performance of personnel is also the part of staffing.

i)Directing :- i. Next step of staffing ii. Personnel are briefed on what to do, how to do , if required to
train, and guide them to do it and monitoring their performance. iii. To motivate personnel and create
congenial conditions for each person to give out his/ her best individually and as a team or group.
Objectives :

1. Timely completion of construction works with in budgeted amount .

2. Use of management techniques for proper scheduling of various items of work, procurement of stores
and cash flow of funds.

3. To evolve an organization which should be competent , effective and should work as a cohesive team.

4. To lay down responsibilities and delegation of authorities for members of organization.

5. Create opportunities for on the job training of junior staff and for discussion / exchange of ideas on
technical matter among the senior staff for correct execution of work.

6. Every one should feel part of the team and give out his/ her best to evolve a reputation of high quality
workmanship

7. Administration should be fair, firm, and transparent and procedures for recognisition of outstanding
work and reprimands for slip ups should be in place and known to all.

8. Provide safe and satisfactory working conditions for all persons at work site with adequate
remunerations.
