Perform a first-hand investigation to observe the reactions of sulfuric acid acting as:

 An oxidising agent
 A dehydrating agent
Method
Oxidising Agent

1. Add 5g of potassium iodide crystals (colourless) into a test tube.

2. Add 2mL of concentrated sulfuric acid. Record observations.

Dehydrating Agent
1. Add 5g of copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate (blue crystals) into a test tube.
2. Add 2mL of concentrated sulfuric acid. Record observations.

Results
Oxidising Agent
Potassium iodide crystals turned yellow-brown due to formation of molecular iodine:
I-(aq) → I (aq) + e-
Sulfuric acid was acting as a oxidising agent (itself was reducing):
H2SO4 (l) + 2H+(aq) + 2e- → SO2 (g) + 2H2O (l).
Dehydrating Agent
Copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate turned white due to its conversion to anhydrous copper (II)
sulfate. This
came about as a result of the dehydrating effects of concentrated sulfuric acid, removing
water from the
crystals: CuSO4.5H2O (s) → CuSO4 (s) + 5H2O (l).
