year and the year before, leases
granted for blocks in water depths be-

news because it means restrictions are
being relaxed somewhat. Deepwater
still supplies only 40% of Gulf of

cates, however, with fewer restric-
tions, the industry is willing to commit
resources to developing the necessary
technology for deepwater exploration
and production.

Tapered Cylinder Nozzle

The tapered cylinder nozzle (TCN) concept successfully
addresses compressor nozzle resonance issues. The TCN
effectively shifts the cylinder nozzle resonance to a higher
frequency, reducing mechanical coupling.
The prototype TCN design developed for the recipro-
cating compressor test facility (RCTF) incorporated an 8 x
4 in. (203 x 102 mm) reducing elbow followed by a 12 x
8 in. (305 x 203 mm) reducer, as shown in Figure 15. The
installed TCN configuration is shown in Figure 16. ■ Figure 15. Tapered cylinder nozzle (TCN) concept for the reciprocat-

show that the acoustic effectiveness of an orifice de-
pends on the flow velocity through the orifice. In addi-
tion, a 34 to 35% reduction in cylinder nozzle resonance
pulsation amplitudes was observed with the TCN in-
stalled (no orifices). Cylinder nozzle resonance pulsa-
tions were reduced by a factor of 2:1 with a large bore
orifice installed in conjunction with the TCN, when com-
pared to a small bore orifice installed in conjunction with
a typical cylinder nozzle.

low pressure drop. The diamonds plot graphically repre-
sents the effect of pressure drop on pulsation amplitude
without the TCN installed. In a similar manner, the circles
plot represents the effect of pressure drop on pulsation am-
plitude with the TCN installed.
Comparing the diamonds plot from the “no orifice” test
point to the “0.625 beta orifice” test point indicates that pul-
sations decrease significantly while pressure drop decreases
only slightly. In addition to that comparison, considering

nozzle resonance. The VO concept, illustrated in Figure
23, is essentially the installation of a side branch absorber
in the cylinder nozzle region. The circled objects in
Figure 23 represent two possible locations for the VO on
the discharge side of the cylinder. In this case, a choke
tube connects a volume to the cylinder nozzle or to the
valve cap. The choke tube and volume are sized such
that the frequency of the VO coincides with the cylinder
nozzle resonant frequency.
Two prototypes (Figure 24) were developed, each con-
necting a volume to either the cylinder nozzle or valve cap
using a short span of 1 in. (25 mm) diameter piping. A 1 in.
(25 mm) full-bore valve was included in each 1 in. (25 mm)
diameter pipe span, allowing data acquisition with and
without each of the VOs installed. Opening or closing each
valve effectively installs or uninstalls each VO. The VOs
were installed in the RCTF, as shown in Figure 25.

A promising feature of the TCN is that it reduces pulsa-
tions by shifting the cylinder nozzle resonance to a higher
frequency, and most likely reducing mechanical coupling.
In summary, key observations from evaluation of the TCN
prototype included: the cylinder nozzle resonant frequency
shifted above the fourth order with the TCN installed (50%
frequency increase); maximum cylinder nozzle pulsation
amplitudes were reduced by 34 to 35% with the TCN in-

Figure 26 shows measured data without the VO installed,

with the VO installed along the cylinder nozzle, and with
the VO installed at the valve cap. Since a side branch ab-
sorber is known to be more effective when located at a pul-
sation maximum, lower pulsations were expected with the
VO installed at the valve cap. In this case, measured data
showed only slightly lower pulsations with the valve cap
VO installed, as compared to the cylinder nozzle VO. In
general, pulsations at the 50 Hz resonance frequency were
reduced by a factor of 4.5 or better with a VO installed.
After testing the valved prototypes, a more compact and
practical design was built. A 3-D model of the design is illus-

evaluating the feasibility of any pro-

posed plant is the constituency of the
raw-gas stream. This could vary all
over the map, depending on the loca-
tion and characteristics of the produc-
tion wells supplying gas. Raw natural
gas generally has methane as its most
abundant constituent. There is a sig-
nificant content of heavier hydrocar-
bons, as well. It also contains an
amount of nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide
and carbon dioxide. Some traces of
helium, carbonyl sulfide, carbon diox-
ide and various other ingredients all
generally heavy with water. The fol-
lowing table shows a typical raw-gas
makeup. Much of these constituents
must be removed before the final liq-
uefaction takes place.
The gas sent to market must meet
specific standards. One term used is
pipeline quality. The end result is a

Duty of Bechtel Corp. discussed a study rendered by the
two representative companies involving larger LNG trains
with the conclusion that trains as large in capacity to 8 mil-
lion tonnes per annum (mtpa) are feasible and could be
cost-effective. Bechtel Corp. recently announced it had won
the contract for Nigeria’s Brass LNG plant. This plant, when
completed, will have a capacity of 10 mtpa. Production is
scheduled to start in 2010-11.
This study was based on the Phillips Optimized Cascade
LNG Process. The study revealed also that plants in the
coming decade will fall into 4, 5 and 8 mtpa sizes based on
available resource and preference of the producer. GE Frame

compressor in the first cycle uses pure propane as refrigerant
for precooling. MR is used in the liquefaction and subcooling
cycle and is made up of nitrogen, methane and propane.
The precooling cycle can cool the process gas down to
-40°F (-40°C). It is also used to cool and partially liquefy
the MR. The cooling is achieved in kettle-type exchangers
with propane refrigerant boiling and evaporating in the
shell side of a shell and tube heat exchanger and with the
process streams flowing in the tube bundles.
A centrifugal compressor with side streams recovers the
evaporated propane streams and compresses the vapor 218
to 363 psi (15 to 25 bar), which is condensed and recycled
to the propane kettles.
In the MR cycle, the partially liquefied refrigerant is sepa-

The process gas passes through a heat exchanger, entering Gas
at the bottom and emerging liquefied at the top. The liquid
MR stream is extracted after the warm or middle bundle and
is flashed across a hydraulic expander onto the shell side. It
flows downward and evaporates, providing the bulk of cool-
ing for the lower bundles. The vapor MR stream passes to the
top (cold bundle) and is liquefied and subcooled, and is
flashed across an expander JT valve into the shell side over
the top of the cold bundle. It flows downward to provide the
cooling duty for the top bundle and, after mixing with liquid
MR, part of the duty for the lower bundles.
The overall vaporized MR stream from the bottom of the
cryogenic heat exchanger is recovered and compressed by

the first MR, and the liquefaction and subcooling are carried
out by the other two refrigerants in a proprietary exchanger
made by Linde. It may also be used for the precooling stage.
The refrigerants are made up of components selected from
methane, ethane, propane and nitrogen.
The three refrigerant compression systems can have sep-
arate drivers or integrated to have two strings of compres-
sion. Large gas turbine drivers have been proposed for
large LNG trains grater than 4 mtpa. An important feature of
the project is that motor drivers will be used for all the
main refrigerant compressors, with sizes up to 60 MW. The
Linde heat exchanger is compatible with other liquefaction
processes in new and expansion projects or as a replace-
ment for old cryogenic exchangers.
The Axens Liquefin process is a two MR process used
in very large LNG baseload projects of train sizes up to 6
mtpa and greater. All cooling and liquefaction is conducted
in plate-fin heat exchangers in cold boxes. The refrigerants
consist of methane, ethane, propane, butane and nitrogen.

the process gas and precool and liquefy the second mixed
refrigerant. The second MR is used to liquefy and subcool

because when you are operating at really cold temperatures

you’re going to have slight gaps in the insulation,” said
David Baker, field service manager at PT&P. “We offset the
insulation layers so that you don’t have a direct path of air
to the pipe. With a direct path of air to the pipe you get
condensation, frost, ice, etc.”
In the field, cold shoes are typically mated with existing
line insulation. Due to the low temperature of the pipe,
moisture from the ambient air can be drawn to the pipe
through gaps that may exist between the cold shoe and the
line insulation. At lower temperatures, where thicker insula-
tion is required, there is greater opportunity for moisture to
be drawn to the pipe. This is because of the increased sin-
gle mating surface area between the line insulation and the
cold shoe.
A solution that eliminates this potential problem is pro-
viding multiple mating surfaces between the line insulation
and the pipe support. Hence, when insulation thickness is
4 in. and greater, multiple layers provide an improved
moisture seal due to steps between the different layers.
Piping Technology & Products can tailor a layering sys-
tem to meet the customer’s requirements.

its nature, the TDL-based gas detec-

said. The result is a very low mainte-

consumables or scheduled calibration.
Developed by Rancho Cucamonga,
California, U.S.A.-based Spectra-
Sensors, its TDL-based analyzers em-
ploy a simple measurement that uses
a fundamental principle: molecules
vibrate when excited by light at spe-
cific wavelengths. Therefore, if you
can detect how much light is ab-
sorbed at these wavelengths, you can
precisely measure the concentration
of a given gas.
The system consists of a cell that
the sample gas flows through, a tun-
able diode laser that emits a specific
wavelength of light through the gas,
an optical detector, and software to
analyze and output the results.
In the past, LNG and NGL gas
processors have relied on surface-based
analyzers such as electrochemical and
quartz crystal cells to measure trace

Increasing its commitment to regional development and
expanding its service and repair capabilities for local cus-
tomers, GE Oil & Gas has established a new Field Service
and Maintenance Center for Trinidad and Tobago, one of
the top five producers of LNG in the world.
High-ranking government officials joined GE executives

jacent to the Atlantic LNG Co.’s production facility.
“This new facility is a key part of our commitment to
support the region by bringing our service capabilities close
to local customers,” said Jeff Nagel, vice president, Global
Services, GE Oil & Gas. “It also will play a key role in our
training program for local citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, Suitable for OEM, new build or
supporting our efforts to maximize local skills and facilitate engine conversions /upgrade.
sustainable development for the island.”
In addition to providing services for customers through-
out the region, a key role for the new maintenance center
will be to support a 17-year contractual service agreement
(CSA) GE signed in 2005, covering 27 gas turbines and 47
centrifugal compressors at the Atlantic LNG facility.
The CSA includes a new maintenance approach based
on an evolution of the modular exchange normally ap-
plied on GE aeroderivative engines and now extended to
GE heavy-duty 32 MW machines, such as the units used
by Atlantic LNG.
Using this approach during scheduled outages, Atlantic
LNG’s existing gas turbines will be removed and replaced
in modules, substantially reducing the turnaround times.
The modules then will be refurbished in the new mainte-
nance center.
“Our patented modular replacement method is designed
to reduce outage durations and significantly increase plant
availability,” noted Nagel.
The new Trinidad and Tobago center, which currently
employs 30 people, offers field service capabilities includ-
ing installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and re-
lated services for GE equipment. It also contains a repair
workshop that offers inspection and repair services, in-
cluding the balancing of centrifugal compressors and gas
turbine rotors. In addition to GE equipment, the workshop
covers a range of equipment from other manufacturers, in-
cluding centrifugal compressors and gas turbines. YOU’VE TRIED OTHERS, NOW TRY ONE THAT WORKS

Pressure Sensors

PCB Piezotronics Inc. has introduced its Series 175 dynamic

pressure sensors, ideal for monitoring combustion pressure in
diesel and natural gas-powered engines and other reciprocating
equipment. Proper monitoring of engines and machinery using
these sensors allows for extended maintenance intervals, im-
proved fuel efficiency and lower NOx emissions, the company
said. Sensors feature piezoelectric sensing elements with very fast
response times, and are best suited for continuous monitoring or
periodic walk-around cylinder balancing. Intrinsically safe ver-
sions are available for explosive gas atmospheres. Frequency re-
sponse may be adjusted for use during engine load changes on
low- or high-speed engines. These sensors have measurement
ranges up to 3,600 psi (250 bar) and a maximum pressure of up
to 4000 psi (300 bar). They are well suited for use in high tem-
peratures up to 570°F (300°C), and are packaged in stainless-
steel housings with rugged cables and connectors. Series 175 fea-
tures a robust M14 thread, and may be mounted to existing
engine pressure indicator valves.

"WHEN WE NEEDED AN UPGRADE,

WE STAYED WITH MURPHY."

“ Our Murphy engine controls were still running after 20 years, but we needed new ignitions and new
technologies. Our old ignition systems kept backfiring the engine and damaging the turbocharger.
We wanted automated startups, diagnostics and remote communications for the future. Someday we want
to be able to check our compressors from our house.

We upgraded our old Tattletale® panels to Murphy compressor panels with TTD™ annunciators and
TDXM temperature scanners. We also replaced our old magneto-based ignition with Murphy Power Ignition®
controls with secondary diagnostics. We got the automation we wanted, and now we're getting longer plug life.

Murphy supported us through the installations, and even included training on the new equipment.

That's why 95% of our engine controls are Murphy.
